[W620]Wheels Rims And Tires
by Dimitris Papanikolaou, Dim
Toyota is a renowned carmaker that produces a wide variety of cars all over the world. It has many segments under its customer base. One section of it is Toyota Racing Development, which in its abbreviated form is called TRD. It is a subsidiary of Toyota and deals in production, design, engineering and marketing of Toyota. In collaboration with Toyota Motorsports, TRD manufactures various parts for increasing the efficiency and look of Toyota vehicles. These include tires, TRD rims and TRD wheels.

Some of Toyota’s popular cars like Tundra come with some TRD components like TRD wheels pre-installed. TRD can be divided into 3 segments. One of them, titled L-tuned, takes care of Lexus products, a luxury brand under Toyota. The professional Racing components distribution wing of TRD is called Kazuma. The other one is named as TRD Sport Parts that function as the regular TRD components distribution.

TRD produces TRD wheels that are composed of Magnesium or Aluminium alloy and they are also called mag wheels. Alloy wheels are superior to conventional steel wheels as they are lightweight and, hence, good for racing cars. Alloy wheels also leave Steel wheels way behind in terms of heat dissipation. Therefore the use of alloy wheels results in better break performance in a car. TRD wheels also add to the “oomph" quotient of a car and the fashion lovers prefer these wheels. As a matter of fact, alloy wheels come at a premium. That explains why they are extensively used in higher end car models. They are not suitable for streetcars and bikes.

The weight of a regular magnesium car wheel can range from 8 to 12 kg depending on the model. The downside of using magnesium is that they can flare up when the heat crosses a limit and this can lead to mishaps. That is why their use is not allowed in certain motor sports in the UK. Some of these wheels are prone to metal corrosion under some circumstances. Some of the widely used TRD wheels are 165 PT533-21050 Wheel Set and PT533-02030 Wheel Set. The wheels undergo Toyota’s stringent standard specification tests during manufacturing. The latter one is given an illusive liquid metal look by using a special paint.

Like all Toyota products, TRD wheels and components come fortified with the carmakers warranty. When one purchases any TRD component and gets them installed by a dealer, he can be assured of availing the company’s warranty.
