[W429]What Foods Cause Acne
by Faye Bautista, Fay
Medically, acne is caused a bacteria P. acnes, and over production of sebum by sebaceous glands. However, there are other factors that do contribute to the development of acne such as poor hygiene. One food factor that will affect acne is the lack of nutrients in the food you eat.

Vitamin E and B complex as well as minerals such as zinc, magnesium, vitamin A, and essential fatty acids are needed for prevention and cure of acne.

Does this mean all foods cannot cause acne? Well, not quite. Recent cases show that acne can also be caused by food allergies.

Eating foods that the body is allergic to leads to a toxic reaction. The immune system fights the food as if it were an invading organism. This can cause inflammation in the skin, and in some cases, acne.

There were cases where a patient has been tested to have high antibody reaction to dairy products. Eliminating this dairy product from the diet solved the acne problem.

How do you know if food is the cause of your acne? The best way is to eliminate a certain food group one at a time. An example is to eliminate dairy foods. Do this for about two months and see if it works. If not, try another food group like high glycemic/refined carbohydrates. After that, try eliminating high fat/fried foods, then copper rich foods, then iodine rich foods.

The reason why it is advisable to start with dairy foods is that it contains many different drugs and hormones that come from the cow's body. As we all know, cows are fed grain with antibiotics added to the grain to prevent the cows from getting diseases. Antibiotics fed to cows pass into the milk it produces, and then to the milk products that we consume. Such added antibiotics through consumption of dairy foods can cause some physical problems as well as aggravate acne.

So there are actually 2 sides of the coin. On one side, people including doctors say that food does not cause acne, while another side says it does. The body is a complex machine and those different foods have different effects on each and every one of us. For some, certain foods won't do any harm, but for others, it might cause certain reactions.

In conclusion, doctors haven't yet found any concrete answer to the question of whether food directly causes acne. More studies and more tests need to be done to finally answer this question.

This creates the well-known process of inflammation. When our bodies have been plagued by illness or injury, then starts the healing process. When our bodies detect infection, its automatic built in response is to get rid of it, and fast.

Our built-in response and repair system shows no mercy to any form of bacteria that has been manifest within our bodies. Inflammation is the "silent" cause of acne. It is called silent because most folks blame acne on genetics or dirty, oily skin and seldom consider that it could be their body's way of trying to rid the bacteria out of their pores.

The job is to get to it quick, and take care of the problem effectively. For those that have frequent acne outbreaks, this can pose a serious problem. Our body's inflammatory response is a wonderful thing, until it attacks our face.

You see, acne is a form of inflammation. In most cases, inflammation is a very good thing. It is the way that we know our bodies are properly handling an injury or illness. Inflammation is a natural part of the healing process.

The reason is this: When our bodies detect that something is wrong, our inflammatory response system attacks and repairs causing redness, inflammation, and oftentimes - scarring. But, if inflammation heals us and makes us better, then why does it also cause so many other problems? There are two parts to the process of inflammation: The healing part and the actual flare-up.

It is great that when we get sick, our body's see fit to fix the problem. But, it is another thing to feel tired because our body's natural defense systems are working so hard to fix the issue. What's more is that when we do encounter a buildup of sebum or clogged hair follicles on our faces is that the inflammatory response not only works in overdrive to repair that particular area, it also begins to attack other small areas around the infection! In turn, we receive more damage than what the acne would have caused initially.

Some of us have a stronger inflammatory response than others, creating even more scarring and redness. There are other things that can cause the hyperactivity of our cells, such as eating greasy foods, medications, too much or too little sun exposure, stress, and genetics. But once the sebum begins to build up on those cells around the hair follicles, it is probably going to be too late. The body has probably already gotten ready to begin the healing process. This can indeed turn into a nightmare, depending on how much healing is needed.

It is bad enough to know that the infection itself has to be taken care of, let along the skin surrounding the area. If healing is the answer, then where's the cure?
