Infertility is the failure of a couple to become pregnant after a year or regular and unprotected intercourse. The fertility process in both the men and women are complex. Infertility affects about 10 percent of all the couples in the country. The probability of a woman becoming pregnant during a single menstrual cycle is only little, 30 percent or so, and this is despite of the ideal circumstances. A third of the infertility problems are due to the infertility of the woman.

In the country, about a tenth of the woman in the population from ages 15 to 44 have problems in getting pregnant or carrying a baby to term. This infertility is due to many risks factors that are equally important. These factors are age, weight, and smoking problems. A woman's fertility declines with age especially when a woman is already in her mid-30s. Extreme weight levels also have an effect on women's fertility. Having low or high weight levels can contribute to infertility. Having a history of smoking affects fertility also. It has been concluded that women who smokes cigarettes are more likely to be infertile than those who don't.

There are two types of infertility. These are:

1. Primary infertility occurs if the couple has never been able to produce a child or has never been pregnant.

2. Secondary infertility happens if the couple has been able to conceive at least once but have not been able to achieve another pregnancy since then.

The Causes of Infertility in Women

There are many causes of infertility. Infertility may be caused by medical conditions that provided damage to the fallopian tubes, conditions that interfere with ovulation, and conditions that cause hormonal complications. Some of these medical conditions includes the following:

* Pelvic inflammatory disease

* Endometriosis

* Polycystic ovary syndrome

* Premature ovarian failure

* Uterine fibroids

The Diagnosis of Infertility and Some Treatment

If after having one year of unprotected sex and you still are unable to conceive a baby, you must talk to your doctors to have an evaluation of your fertility. Testing the fertility of a woman should be performed especially if the woman is over 35 years old and if the partner has no known risks of infertility. The medical history should be evaluated too and some specific diagnostic tests like the following can be performed:

* Blood test to examine hormonal levels

* Urine test to assess and evaluate hormonal levels

* Ultrasound and imaging tests to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes

Treating infertility is quite complex. Treatment for infertility should address first and foremost any underlying medical condition that may have played a contribution to the fertility problem. If this step or process does not restore the fertility, then there are several treatments that are available in order for a couple to become fertile again and conceive a child, and they are mentioned below:

* Lifestyle measures like living a healthy lifestyle and planning sexual activities with ovulation cycles and managing stress and emotions.

* Intake of drugs and medications that would help induce ovulation such as gonadotrophins and clomiphene.

* Use of assisted reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization.

The moment where you find out that you are not able to have children can be a very devastation moment to both the man and the woman. Many people will go there entire live waiting to have children and being told that you will never be able to can give you a feeling of worthlessness or even inferiority.

It is important that you know that there are things that you currently do that you can avoid doing because they causes infertility issues. This information is important because some of the causes of infertility can actually be reversed and you might be able to have children eventually. This means that even if your doctor is telling you that you can't have children today the situation might be totally different in a few months. By following the doctor's orders to the point, you could be on your way to having your first child like everyone else.

You need to remember though, that if your doctor tells you that your infertility is caused by something that you cannot control or do anything about it's not the end of your world – actually it is far from it. There are many options available to you and the option of adopting a child can be just as joyous as having a child naturally.

Unfortunately it is normal that if a couple finds out that they can't have children, the woman will often blame herself first because she will initially think that it is her fault. For most women it is their worst fear to be told that they can't have children. The causes of female infertility are many and things like the genetic code, smoking several cigarettes a day, eating a poor diet, not doing your exercise and many more.

Lifestyle characteristics like a bad diet and smoking heavily can be changed by you and in return it can reverse your infertility and make you become fertile again. In cases such as malfunctions in genetic code there is, at this point in time, nothing that can be done.

But if you are a woman you shouldn't jump into conclusions just yet. The best way to a true conclusion is by getting tested by a doctor because it may not be you but actually the man that is the cause of the inability to become pregnant.

The causes of male infertility are many and things such as a low sperm count, certain diseases and genetics play a great part. As with women daily smoking, drug use and other lifestyle characteristics do play a huge part in male infertility and can be reversed by quitting.

When a couple cannot become pregnant, the man as well as the woman should be tested to determine who is causing of the couple's inability to conceive. The man's test is quite easy as he will just have to provide a sperm sample which will be tested by the doctor. Sometimes a urine and blood test is needed as well to determine if there are any other internal causes for infertility.
