[W579]What To Expect Book
by Scott Lindsay, Sco
Most bookstores see a book signing as a means of increasing foot traffic and promoting a sense of connectedness with the writing community. Most bookstore owners are open to the idea of providing time, space and promotion for a book signing.

From a writers perspective this should be a gold mine in promotion. Bookstore owners will often post notices announcing the book signing; many will also provide announcements in regional newspapers that are designed to promote the book signing.

Bring comfortable shoes and your favorite pen. Then enjoy your moment in the sun.

However, unless you are a well-established author there are a few things that you should not expect from a book signing.

A waiting line.
The sale of a significant amount of books.
Writer's cramp.

The truth is a book signing will likely result in a few friends, family and an assortment of curious others who have come to have you personally sign their purchased copy of the book.

So, if that's all there is to it, why do it?

Well, primarily because as a writer you should consider yourself a 'word farmer'. What I mean by that is a book signing can be a wonderful time to visit with the general public about your book, its subject matter and why you chose to write the book and be willing to wait to see the seed sprout.

In many cases, positive contacts with those who do not purchase your book may ultimately find these patrons returning to purchase the book at a later date.

A book signing isn't about 'hawking your wares' it is about good will and being an ambassador for the craft of writing.

If you have been invited to participate in a book signing do so with good grace and with an eye toward the long-term goals you have in writing. A book signing is simply one small step toward your ultimate destination, enjoy the step, but don't make too much fuss over it.

There is some form of ego in every writer, but a book signing isn't a good place to don a prima donna persona. Remember the people who come to see you want to leave with something positive to consider - not an author to avoid.

Canada has a lot of great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors while canoeing down a river or lake. Observe the wildlife and the beautiful scenery for a once-in-a-lifetime chance that you and your family could have. When you sign up for your canoe trip you will have the option of driving in or flying to your destination, and most trips are from three to seven days, if the company you choose has those kinds of options.

When you go on your canoe trip most of the instructors are orca/crca certified and will help teach you paddling skills and how to handle your canoe properly. They will also show you how to dock your canoe properly, wilderness techniques, emergency plans, cooking in the outdoors, map reading, what to pack for your trip, and how to pick great campsites.

They will provide you with canoes, life jackets, food, tents, and backpacks for your gear if needed. Just think about it, nothing could be better then paddling down a beautiful river listening to the water and the wildlife in the trees, stopping for an afternoon bite, maybe get out your fishing pole and throw in a line, or take a hike at your camp and explore the beautiful landscape of Canada.

This kind of trip is perfect for the whole family that loves to be out in the wilderness getting fresh air, and getting away from an everyday routine, and spending good quality time with your loved ones. A canoe trip would also be a great idea for a newlywed couple that are the outdoorsy type. Spending the entire honeymoon in the beautiful wilderness would be one of the most memorable times of your life.

Alternatively, you could plan a trip to Disneyland or someplace similar that is overcrowded where the typical day consists of standing in line forever to ride an amusement ride, or having to make reservations for everything that you want to do.

A canoe trip in Canada, on the other hand, can potentially provide you with the most memorable experience of your life and great stories to tell for years to come. Being outdoors in the beautiful wilderness of Canada is not for everybody. But if you're an outdoorsman, you'll receive a great life experience and learn new skills.

Whichever of Canada's famed rivers, most of them on federally protected land, you choose to travel down, it will be one of the only places in the world where you have the opportunity to see the unique wildlife and natural geographical features that abound.
