by May Belmonte, May
Nursing Assistants are unique group of individuals who are dedicated to provide the best possible care to the patients. They work really hard to make sure that the patient's basic needs are met. They are trained to work multi-task, and assist Nurses with any type of emergency that arises. However, their ultimate goal is to help others feel better.

In today's hospitals and extended care facilities, nurse assistants have an important role in the health care team. They are also known as nursing aide, personal care worker, unlicensed assistive nursing personnel, or hospital attendants. And their title depends on the institutional and local governmental policies.

The outlook of the job for nursing assistants is excellent. And they often play an important role in providing basic care while ensuring the safety and comfort of the patients. They generally perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. As their duties, they will deliver messages, answer patients' call lights, serve meals, help patients to eat, make beds, they help to dress and bath the patients who do not able to perform their activities of daily living. They also provide skin care to patients; take vital signs such as their temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure. Their tasks also include helping patients get into and out of the bed and they accompany during ambulation/walking. They also escort patients to operating or examining rooms and help to keep the patient rooms neat and clean in order to have a good ambiance which can make patient be relaxed and comfortable. They are also responsible to set up medical equipment, store or move supplies to their proper place. The nurse assistant must not only be very skilled in the actual procedures being performed but must also be able to observe a patient's physical, mental or emotional condition and report that information back to the nursing and medical staff.

Some nursing assistants choose to work as home care aides helping the elderly, disabled, ill, and mentally disabled persons live in their own homes or in residential areas instead in hospitals or health facilities. These people need more extensive personal and home care than family or relatives or friends can provide. And in order to make their duties properly, they should be responsible, emotionally stable, compassionate, and cheerful. In addition, nursing assistants/aides should be honest, tactful, and discreet because they work in private homes.
