Health Care Reform
by Roland Jefferson III, Rol

Health care reform is the subject that will elicit lofty as well as noble goals that will hopefully reveal the secret to quality as well as affordable health care for all, which also means that the stakes are pretty high. There is certainly general agreement that there is a need for medical system reform, and a solution needs to be found, though it does not necessarily mean rushing into and taking the wrong steps that will only help to make the problem worse, and thus cause the public to pay higher prices.

Necessary To Address The Root Causes Of The Problems

Before thinking about health industry reforms, it is necessary to address the very root causes of the problems being faced. It is quite easy to point fingers at what medical care providers provide in isolated instances, or what the government, employers as well as patients or other related systems experience from health care services. It would be a lot better if one takes a serious look at the structure and its related systems, which in turn drive the behavior of health providers, and then improve on the quality of medical services, and thus reduce the cost to the public.

Medical care reforms, if properly implemented, should help in providing inexpensive services, and not having it shoved down people's throats, especially if they do not require such services. Many people are of the firm belief that treatments are in effect the product, or service of health care. Medical care reform should mean getting good health as a product, which should be cheaper than poor health.

If we go by past records, we will find that medical care consumers do not shop for health care depending on the results they get; rather, it is perceived that all health care is more or less the same, and that the costlier the health care, the better would be the health care provided.

The need of the hour is for medical reform to not be the creation of self-created feeling of need, but rather it should be based on informed decisions and acted on when the time is right. There is little doubting the fact that each medical care reform proposal will be backed by many case studies and demonstrable facts, and when such facts as well as proposals are filtered, it should enable one to determine whether such medical reforms will increase, or reduce the value of health care that the patient receives, and thus should form the basis for accepting or rejecting such medical care reforms.
