Sponsors, Sponsors Everywhere!
by John Kortex, Joh
It seems when you turn on a professional sports game these days you hear that is sponsoring the game; you see large banners or billboards with names of various companies who are sponsoring. What is this all about? Is all the sponsorship really necessary? There is a valid reason why there are sponsors everywhere, and when you know why there are sponsors, you might feel just a bit less irritated at their banners, statements, commercials, and billboards.

Sponsorship is everywhere because many sports organizations, stadiums, and sports affiliations don't want to pay to put the game on themselves. As a fan, we don't realize how much money it actually costs to put a game on television, let alone in front of the fans. If the National Football league or the National Basketball Association attempted to pay for every game out of pocket without the help of sponsors, they might go broke and there wouldn't be anymore televised sports games for your viewing pleasure. It seems extreme, doesn't it?

Every sports game requires a venue, marketing, travel for players, and compensation for the players, coaches and staff. While there is a lot of money made on ticket sales and merchandise, it wouldn't be enough to continue to have game after game every season the way we have now. So, sponsors simply help to defray the costs of putting on such a spectacular sporting event. Great sports cost money, and if you want to see these sporting games continue on television and even in local venues, then sponsorship is the best way to continue to bring you the games that you love!

Should sponsorship be so noticeable? As annoying as all the sponsorship can be to the fans that tune into games, it needs to be noticeable. The sponsor needs something in return for their investment, so they are allowed to put up signs and mention their names and products in hope that fans will come buy their product or service. If a sponsor finds that they are successful, they'll continue to sponsor a team or league season after season because the sponsorship is beneficial to both parties.

So, the next time you feel a bit irritated by all the sponsorship campaigns, remember that without sponsors you might not be sitting in front of your television watching a game at all. The athletes you love to watch demand top dollar salaries, and that money has to come from somewhere, so why not through sponsors who may or may not turn you onto products and services that you really could use? Sponsorship works for you and for the professional sports teams that you have grown to love. So, ignore the sponsors or pay attention, it could pay off!
