This breed has a wonderful temperament and unlike their believed breed start the chow, they are great with kids. The Shar Pei have their origins in China and were bred specifically for the face, brains and strength, the blue Shar pei is a rare color so expect to pay more if you want one than you would for another color.
The blue Shar Pei especially was the mark showing long lines of breeding, not to mention tedious planning to come about their rare blue color. To obtain the blue Shar Pei, which also comes from China, where their strength and intelligence were purposely bred into the breed as much as the wrinkled face and large excess of skin and prickly fur. It is an exceedingly hard thing to accomplish with great results.
Known for being a reserved breed, the Shar Pei tends to think for them selves and will be overly affectionate, loyal and extremely devoted to those it considers family. The royal family of China created the breed to protect them and their families. This powerful dog is willing to die if needed to protect its family and home. The blue Shar Pei in its rareness is one of the more expensive of the breeds as a warning to the buyer. The Shar Pei was introduced to an U.S. dog magazine in 1973 by a businessperson out of Hong Kong.
As with any pure bred animal there are a few things to look out for when it comes to the Shar Pei's health. A good, reputable breeder will breed for health so these concerns should not pose a problem with your new pet. They are however, things to look out for. Some of the things to look out for are fevers. Shar Pei's are prone to unexplained fevers as well as swollen hocks, which can be a sign of a serious medical condition. Some Shar Pei's have issues with their skin due to hereditary weaknesses caused but excessive and unregulated breeding.
Even though breeders created them to be a work dog, whether as a fighter or guard dog, the blue Shar Pei has proven to be a beautiful all around dog that is perfect for adding to any family structure. Even as the blue Shar Pei are also becoming close to extinction.
They are a very active breed of dog so be sure you have either a yard to allow them to run around in, or you have the time to walk and play with them. Because of the excess skin and how it is lays on the dog, as well as the coat, these animals are more likely to suffer from the heat so plenty of shade and water needs to be available to them if they are outside.
These dogs weight between forty and fifty-five pounds so they are considered medium sized animals be sure to check with your home owners' association or apartment complex before purchasing one. Blue Shar Pei's make a great addition to any household so why not consider one of these lovely dogs the next time you are looking for a pet to being into your home.

Originally from China, the Shar Pei can easily be distinguished because of its wrinkles and a tongue that is blue-black. This particular breed has a very rough and coarse coat and that is how it got its name, which in the Chinese language means sand skin. When you first get your Shar Pei puppy, you will notice that it has a lot of wrinkles, though once your puppy begins to grow older and matures, many of these wrinkles will have faded away, and its coat will have become smoother.

Because of this coarseness it got its name, which in Chinese translates to sand skin, which is a close approximation of its body skin. As puppies, they are sure to have plenty of wrinkles, though as they grow in age, these will slowly lessen and are not so pronounced.

The Shar Pei can have more than one color and among the ones that are common to this breed you will find colors such as red like a rose, blue, sand, black and even cream, and it also shares the blue-black colored tongue with its relative the Chow Chow.

Other than that, the Shar Pei is distinguished because of its loose skin and head that is covered by wrinkles in large folds, while some varieties will have tighter skins and wrinkles will only appear on the face and whither.

The Shar Pei has three different types of coats including the brush, bear and horse coats. They are also prone to suffering from health problems that may be due to irresponsible breeding. One such malady it is known to suffer from is entropion, which causes the eyelashes to curl inward and thus irritates the Shar Pei's eyes. To lessen the risk of health problems, manufacturers of dog foods have even created special dry foods for the Chinese Shar Pei that will prevent common skin allergies and also sores from affecting the breed.

One thing that all owners of Shar Peis notice is the independent nature and also that they are quite reserved in their behavior, often staying aloof and not easily making friends with people they do not know or recognize. Part of the reason for such characteristics could be that it was originally bred to be a watchdog. Nevertheless, it is very devoted to its master and will show affection and also loyalty to other members of the owner's family.

The Shar Pei, which no doubt is a strong creature, will still suffer from health-related issues and so it does require careful selection before being purchased so that you don't end up with a pet that is not well suited for your home. It would be in your best interest for you to obtain a Shar Pei only from a reputable and responsible breeder, which will ensure a healthy and well-bred puppy. Nevertheless, it has many endearing qualities such as being loving and though possessive, is a great guard dog and also excellent family dog as well and very independent too.

The breed originates from China's Guangdong province and was well known from that time for being a fighting dog that also made an excellent watchdog. That is why originally, the Chinese Shar Pei served as a watchdog for the royal family of China, and thus is well suited for defending. And despite being in danger of extinction and being termed a rare breed, it is now thriving in some parts of the world and makes an outstanding family pet, and is often affectionately known as "Golden Lion".
