For those who suffer periodic heartburn, prevention can be the key to having a good day. Knowing what triggers the onset of heartburn will enable a person to avoid those triggers and prevent heartburn from ruining an otherwise good day. Heartburn is caused by the stomach content, including acid, being pushed back up into the esophagus. The acid wreaks havoc on the tender lining of the esophagus, causing a severe burning sensation.
There are many successfully heartburn prevention steps a person can take that will help them enjoy good food and spirits without fear of the suffering that may typically accompany a night on the town. For those who suffer from chronic indigestion, the heartburn prevention process should be a daily occurrence. Caffeine and nicotine are known triggers for heartburn and should be avoided by those who suffer frequent bouts of heartburn. Additionally, they have been shown to be risks of other health problems and probably should be avoided, even if the person doesn't suffer from heartburn.

There are some people who have what they term as a cast iron stomach, insinuating they can eat anything and everything and never suffer from heartburn. For those with a regular type stomach, heartburn prevention can be a necessary part of daily life. Still, some others may suffer heartburn by just thinking about eating something spicy. While typically, eating spicy foods may not trigger an attack of heartburn, those with a tender stomach may want to avoid it altogether.
Over time, everyone begins to know what may trigger an attack of heartburn and for some it can be stress-related. When a person is under extreme duress, the body may pump out additional acid causing heartburn. One method of heartburn prevention may be simply to eliminate the stress in their life, however this is not always possible. Learning to control stress can be a great heartburn prevention technique, if there have been no foods identified as an indigestion trigger.
Those suffering frequent heartburn should keep a diary for at least three weeks, detailing everything they eat or drink and at what time to better understand what foods cause heartburn. Prevention may be as simple as changing the foods being consumed or the time of day in which it is eaten.
