[A31]A Fear Of Flying
by Arin Trinity, Ari
The world spans thousands of miles. Big, indeed, with roads to traverse, oceans to cross, and airspace to cruise. People go places all the time, and depending on who you are, these places vary in distance. Walking can get the job done, but cars are even better; but sometimes cars don't quite cut it. Boats help, but only over water. Usually the answer to any form of long distance travel is to fly. Problem is, airplanes offer less control to the traveller when compared to a car, and mechanically they're also more intimidating than boats.

But the fear of flying generally stems from other phobias not directly related to the sensation of being several thousand feet off the ground. These "external" phobias manifest themselves in the fear of, say, crossing the ocean, or of hijacking and terrorism; it's not that they only occur on airlines versus an automobile; it's that they're more likely. This likelihood is the catalyst for many people's fear of flying. But "fear" should not be equated to "anxious." While some people feel slight anxiety over flying, others are totally debilitated.

Ostensibly, the fear of flying will no doubt occur to anyone where flying is not commonplace. That is to say, fear of flying is not a matter of probability, because it is a matter of improbability. Airline disasters are less likely to occur more than they are to occur. Get it? This does not imply naivete on the part of the traveller. It implies that in comparison car accidents are tenfold more likely ot occur than airline disasters. So if the fear of flying is logical, than it should be that those afraid to fly should also fear driving. This is only to point out the irrationality of flying-phobia. Not that the fear was ever rational, like all things emotional. But that fact only makes it all the more treatable.

The most accessible way to treat this phobia is to be educated. Simply being aware of the actual risks, especially the improbable ones, is enough to alleviate most people. Because, to stay irrational and fearful to flight hinders so much more in life, like speedy travel to other continents. The principle way to view fear of flying is exactly for what it is: a phobia to be overcome. Not only is it entirely irrational, but it admits a certain amount of naivete and ignorance on the part of the traveller; you are more likely to be car jacked or to drown on a boat.

Also take into consideration airline safety. Research and scrutinize the airlines you choose; and if the need to press further compels you, examine their flight histories.

Sitting all buckled up, shaking in your shoes and sweating profusely? Well you will be surprised to know there are many men like you who are suffering the same fate as you. Yes, flying phobia is one of the most common fears that ail men. Caused often due to initial bad experiences while flying, such as turbulent flying, bad landing or take offs, can leave one scared of flying. But this anxiety over flying can easily be got over if only a little will power is exerted.

1.The first step to getting rid of this flying fear is to accept that the chances of meeting with an accident in the air is as high as on the ground and that you need help to get over your fear, otherwise it will only grow worse. And since these days flying is essential in every man's life especially when it's for work, having flying fear will only leave you in the lurch.

2. Admitting you have a fear of flying may take you some time. That is OK. The next thing to do is go and talk to somebody about it. Ideally a professional, that way you can be totally open and honest. These sessions are commonly available and extremely effective. So look for a good therapist who can help you out with your problem. It is perfectly acceptable to talk and be open and honest about your fear. They will have heard about it before.

3. There are also millions of effective self-help books, which write about techniques to be used while trying to eradicate this flying phobia. So step three would be to avail the help of these books and learn about breathing techniques, and other methods to relax while flying. Check out your local library or bookstore.

4.Take a flight in a virtual simulator. The sensation of flight may actually help you to realize that the fear can be easily overcome. Then again, if you still have intense anxiety in the flight that remains safely on the ground in a stationary position, then you might find that the fear is deep rooted in something other than any actual danger.

5. Phone up the airline. You would be amazed at how much help and advise they will give you about flying and how safe it is. They will help you throughout the whole of your journey if you ask them.

6. You could also purchase an audiotape or CD, which would help you throughout the flight by guiding you through well researched breathing and relaxation methods on the flight, therefore keeping you distracted as well as calm and under control.

7. Finally know that you can get over your fear and have faith in yourself to do what is necessary to get over your fear. If you believe you can conquer your fear, you will. The only limits you place are actually those that you believe hold you back.

So go ahead and try any of these methods and fly without fear or trauma. Remember that accidents can happen anywhere, air, land and water. So there is no reason for you to feel that you are going to meet with an accident just because you are flying miles high. So on your next flying trip be confident and have a great time. Oh! Remember to enjoy the flight and what you are seeing.
