How To Choose The Right Vitamin Supplements
by Peter Vermeeren, Pet

Everyone needs to know how to choose the right vitamin supplements. Vitamins are an investment in health and, because almost no one gets sufficient vitamins and minerals from their diets, it is a very wise investment to make. Each day, taking the right supplements can ensure you maintain your current health, recover from illness or injury quickly, as well as improve health concerns you may have.

As with any other investment, you want to know exactly what to invest in to make your expenditure pay off. Read the labels of multivitamin or any vitamin supplements carefully so that you will know exactly what you are purchasing. If your order online, the nutrient list should be readily available. The label should also list the percentage of the Food and Drug Administration's daily recommended value for each ingredient in the supplement. It is not necessary to purchase the most expensive product to get one of the best products, so compare labels carefully before you choose.

When shopping for vitamin supplements, look for "USP" on the label. This means the stands of the U.S. Pharmacopeia have been meet under exacting laboratory conditions. Not all quality vitamins will carry this mark, but it can help you determine if a brand you are not familiar with is reputable, especially if the price is remarkably low.

A good vitamin supplement should contain 100% of the Daily Value of Vitamins D, B1, B2, B3, B5, B12 and folic acid. There should be a minimum of 20 micrograms of vitamin K as well. There should be 5,000 IU or less of vitamin A and 40-50% of that vitamin A should be beta carotene.

Choose a vitamin supplement that contains 100% of the Daily Value for copper, zinc, iodine, selenium and chromium. It can also contain some magnesium.

Be sure your vitamin supplement selection contains 100% of the needed values for both vitamin C and E because these are valuable antioxidants. Women in their child-bearing years should also look for 100% of the necessary amount of iron unless they have been advised by their doctor not to take supplementary iron due to a disorder. Others should take at least 40-50% of the daily requirements of iron as a supplement.

Don't be taken in by fancy words. "High potency" is meaningless because there are no guidelines the supplement must meet. A basic, well-balanced daily vitamin supplement along with a good diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle should keep your healthy and your body working at peak performance.
