Beware! We Are Losing Our Young Generation To Depression!
by Denzing Jones, Den

Childhood has often been described as one of the most beautiful periods of every individual's life. And the statement is true in most of the cases. Childhood is that period of life when a person is completely carefree and devoid of any responsibility. The adjectives that more often than not go with childhood are peace, simplicity, laughter, colorfulness etc. But in the world today, in many places childhood has ceased to be what it was in the earlier times. Today there is much more to childhood than just carefree flight. There are pressures, there are complexities, there are expectations, and there is loneliness.

The world today is highly competitive. And the pressure of this competition has touched the children also. There is pressure to do well, in class, in career, and in life. Parents are always worried about how there children will fare, and this anxiety transfers to the children who are under great pressure to match up to their parents expectations thus leading to cases of suicides or attempt to suicides when they fail or do not score well in exams. They think they will go extremely wrong if they fail to deliver as per their parents' wishes. Hence the ultimate result is that they burden themselves with unwanted worries and expectations and live a life that very often borders on depression. Though it is sad but it is very true that knowingly or unknowingly parents are also responsible for the confused sorry state of their children. Children grow up with the addition burden of their parents' expectations and if at anytime in life they fail to live up to these expectations they go through immense depression and sometimes even end their lives. So it can be said that the children today are robbed of the very essence of childhood.

Apart from this, today children are exposed to a number of factors that are very much responsible for their muddled minds. Children are exposed to various disturbing elements like violence, pornography, addictions etc. Because of peer pressure and recognition in a group, children take to addictions. They might just take it up with the intention of tasting, but soon it develops into an addiction.

All these factors when come together confuse the children to the brim. They are not in a position to decide what is good and bad for them. They grow with a lot of burdens in their young immature minds and as a result develop depression. The tragedy is that the anti depressants that are available in the market today are mostly not fit to be administered to the children. one of the most popular depression pills is also not that appropriate for children unless your doctor gives an approval. One can easily but it is a prescribed medicine hence should be consumed only on getting a prescription from a valid doctor. Since it is very tough both to diagnose and treat depression in children, you should give extra attention to the fact that your child never falls prey to depression.
