Yet another semi-precious stone, the azurite is a basic copper carbonate mineral that is azure blue in color. It is also known as chessylite. The name of this has been derived from "lazaward" which is a Persian word and from "azura" which is a Latin word, both meaning blue sky. This gemstone's distinct blue color has caused it to be used as a pigment for many centuries now. It could also come in an appealing pattern of blue-green which is called azure-malachite.

Occasionally, azurite could be coated with colorless wax and could also be impregnated with hardened agents or plastic, though rare, for the improvement of its appearance and durability.
