The Process Of Detoxification Explained
by Chrischanning, Chr
If you or someone you know is addicted to drugs or an abuser of drugs and needs help then drug detoxification is for you. Drug detoxification will help to control drug intoxication and withdrawal through a set of interventions. Through drug detoxification the toxins accumulated from drug use are removed from the patient's body. The process of drug detoxification will lessen the physical effects of addictive substances. Things associated with drug addiction such as behavioral issues, psychological aspects, and social factors are not always treated through detoxification.

Through drug detoxification withdrawal symptoms of drug users are reduced and relieved while at the same time drug users begin to adjust to living without drugs. Keep in mind that drug detoxification is just an early step in a long-term treatment; it is not a full treatment. Drug detoxifications along with treatments normally last several months and are held by community programs in residential centers.

Three Steps To Success

There are three steps to drug detoxification. The first step is the evaluation step. Through the process of evaluation patients are tested to find out what kind of substances are in their bloodstream along with the amount of that substance or substances. Patients are also tested for dual diagnosis, co-occurring disorders, behavioral issues, and mental issues.

Stabilization is the second of the three steps in detoxification. The stabilization process guides patients through detoxification. To get through this, patients can use medication or they can choose not to, however, it is more common that patients will use medication to help them through the process. Through stabilization patients are told what they are to expect when they go through the treatment and recovery process. Occasionally family members or people who are close to the patient will be asked to come in to show their support and become involved.

The third and final step of the drug detoxification process involved guiding patients into treatment. Through this process patients begin to get ready for things to come in the actual recovery process. Patients generally agree to enroll in a drug rehabilitation program in order to complete their detoxification process.

Rapid detoxification is another type of drug detoxification. Rapid detoxification is made for opiate based substances like vicodin, heroin, methadone, and prescribed narcotic pain killers. Rapid detoxification generally takes place in a hospital and conducted with a general anesthesia. Certified anesthesiologists and specialized nursing staffs normally oversee these types of procedures. Through rapid detoxification the patient under anesthesia is given medication that accelerates the physical reactions of the withdrawal process that lasts from four to six hours.

Becoming drug free is a difficult process, but through drug detoxification you will be on a road to recovery. Drug detoxification is just the start of becoming clean though; it will prepare you for the future and lessen the physical effects of substance abuse but there is more than that to becoming drug free. Once you've made it through the three steps of drug detoxification it is best that you go through drug rehab if you really want to get off of drugs. Becoming drug free can take quite a long time but in the end it will be worth it.
