[C1283]Criminal Record Background Checks
by George Foerstel, Geo
It is widely-known that background checks are being conducted more and more by companies and the government with every passing year. This of course is necessary if one is applying for a sensitive job like the ones which will put them in connection with the elderly or small children. Another reason for a background check to be done is if someone is looking to purchase a gun, whether it is a pistol or a rifle.

Federal law "prohibits firearm possession by or transfer to prohibited persons including those who are under indictment for or convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than 1 year." But criminals, with their complete disregard of the law would not be deterred by this federal law. Good thing for law-abiding citizens, background checks can help law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the illegal transfer of guns to crooks.

Under the Brady Act, a background check is a step necessary to be taken before a gun is sold to an individual. Initially, there is a five-day waiting period but with the advent of the World Wide Web, it only takes minutes to do a background check on an individual looking to purchase a gun.

With the Brady Act in place, it has become harder for criminals to get their hands on a gun from a gun dealer duly licensed by the Treasury Department. Although there are still some criminals who can get a gun through illegal ways, the Brady Act and its mandatory background check is a good step towards keeping any community safe.

According to the Bureau of Justice, last year (2007), there were more than 8.6 billion background checks done for individuals looking to purchase a gun or secure a concealed carry permit. That number shows how many guns are out there in the country and if even a little less than half of that goes to the wrong hands, it would be a disaster waiting to happen.

Ever since the inception of the Brady Act in 1994, there were more than 87 million requests for background checks regarding transfer of firearms. Bureau of Justice reports that of these, more than 1.5 million shows that the applicant is not cleared to own a firearm.

Furthermore, last year, 39 percent of the rejected firearms transfers were caused by the individuals having felony convictions. This number shows that the risk posed by criminals owning a gun has been controlled thanks to the Brady Act and background check.

It might seem insulting, on the one hand to check on people's backgrounds, but it is undeniably prudent. What it does for you is that it puts you in a relative comfort zone about the decision you make. You wouldn't take in anyone you cannot vouch for, or whom you think has been insincere with their application. Someone with obvious integrity as proven by a background check on past events in their lives is someone you wouldn't want to let go. It is just that simple.

It is rather rare for banks and other large organizations to hire outsiders to do background checking on staff for them. Most times they have their own human resources departments that do the ground work and come up with the results. Those who employ PIs or police records cannot afford to pay continuous salaries for the same functions. They are smaller businesses.

The police force is structured in such a way as to ensure that there are always checks and balances. First, there is the regular police department, with their rakings and all that; then there is the Internal Affairs Division that works primarily to make sure that everything stays clean. Even after they have you checked out before getting the job, from time to time, they repeat the process just to be sure that the hazards of the trade have not altered your perception in some weird way.

If you are the sensitive type, you might not appreciate someone doing a background check on you, especially if you are very concerned about your privacy. Even though you are aware that the process is inevitable, you still don't like it and you can hardly stand the idea. This means that you are probably better off creating a job for yourself as opposed to applying to some large corporation that pays big bucks.

In view of the influx of people into America, the government has introduced thorough background check. This is to deter criminals who might want to snick into the country. The immigration service is the organization at the forefront of this search.

It is ideal to run background check on oneself occasionally. This is to avoid taking chances on such useful details. Presently, employers use it as a measure to employing applicants. The sectors that are most concerned are banking, health, children, education and security.

Many people are becoming more conscious of their environment by conducting background checks. The essence is to know the past records of individuals they wish to have dealings with. This consciousness stems from the fact that many people now pretend to be what they are not.

Most people look innocent enough on their face – smooth, suave, and totally impeccable liars. Some even know how to beat a lie-detector – it's more than just experience, it's like a gift. So when dealing with guys like this, you might never know where you stand. This is why a background check is totally crucial before bringing anyone in for a job.
