[C1292]Cross Country Mountain Bike
by David Wilson, Dav
You're an avid mountain biker, and you're looking at getting a used cross country bike to add to your stable. Good choice, buying a used cross country bike can be a great way to save a lot of money. Since cross country bikes aren't abused as much as, say, downhill bikes, the used market has a lot to offer.

To help you find the best deal possible, I've put together this list five tips to help you get a great deal on a used cross country mountain bike. Read, and start saving!

1. Buy What You Need

This is perhaps the best way to save money. Sure, that fancy, all carbon fiber bike with components that push the boundaries of metallurgical science is pretty cool, but if you just ride with friends on the weekend, do you really need that? Conversely, if you're a serious racer, don't skimp, because a bike that doesn't suit your needs is just money wasted. Know yourself, know your level of seriousness, and purchase accordingly.

2. Look for Quality

When you're buying used, there is no need to waste your time looking at anything other than quality bikes. Since you're buying used, you can get a much better bike at the same price point as you would with a new one. Because of this, you should only buy a solidly built, higher end bike. Going entry level with a used bike will only cause excess headaches and repairs.

3. RSS Feeds

Here's a great specific tip. Sites like eBay and Craiglist allow you to perform a search, and grab the results as an RSS feed that gets constantly updated. This way, you can keep up to date with the latest deals on the bike of your choice, without having to constantly check back to see what's new. This works great for the tech savvy buyer. If you're not familiar with RSS, look it up, and prepared to be amazed.

4. Browse Completed eBay Listings

This allows you to learn what your bike generally sells for. When you do an eBay search, you'll be able to check a box to show completed listings. This way, you can see what a given bike is really worth on the open market. Once you have this number, you can save big when you see a bike offered below that price. This works great with the RSS tip above.

5. Consider a Hardtail

This is cross country, right? If your trails aren't super rough, considering buying a hardtail to save a ton of money. You'll also enjoy a lighter weight, more reliable ride. Something to consider, for sure.

So, I hope these tips help you find a great deal on a used cross country bike. As always, do our homework, and used your common sense. If you look around, though, I can guarantee that you will find some great deals on cross country bikes that will last you for years to come.
