[A205]Acrylic And Oil Paintings
by Candice Christie, Can
The frame gives a more finished look to the oil painting and helps define the boundaries of the artwork. The marriage of a frame with an oil painting may be harmonious or discordant, enhancing or distracting - a poorly chosen frame can ruin the appearance of the oil painting, while an appropriate one can make it shine.

There are many different styles, colors and price ranges of frames with cheap ones made in moulded plastic and more expensive ones carved in wood. An oil painting may be seen in different frames either by the use of computer-generated montages on the internet, or by physically standing the oil painting in successive frames in a framer's shop. The final choice of the frame depends on the owner's personal taste, the proposed location of the oil painting, the harmony between oil painting and frame, and the relationship of the frame to the room where it will hang.

With modern art, you may choose to hang your oil painting without a frame. Providing that the stretcher is solid and reasonably thick, then the oil painting can be wired to hang without a frame. This unframed approach to exhibiting modern oil paintings means that the viewer focuses entirely on the artwork itself.

How to Hang an Oil Painting

Materials:

2 eye screws
Woven picture wire.

Procedure:

1) Mark 2 points on the inside of the two side stretcher bars about 25% down from the top of the canvas.

2) Screw the eyes into the stretcher being careful not to apply pressure to the stretched area of the canvas.

3) Measure a piece of wire the width of the canvas plus 6-8 inches.

4) Thread the wire through the first screw twice then neatly wrap the remaining wire around itself.

5) Pull the wire across the back of the painting so it is not quite taut then repeat the threading process on the second side.

6) To hang the oil painting, use an appropriately strong hook, i.e. one that can support double the weight of the painting. The painting should hang as flush to the wall as possible.

Now the title is made of three words. Let's take them from back to front. Paintings are an expression of the inordinate. The seat of subconscious where our creativity defines itself irrespective of human borders becomes a work of art. Painting is one such art form. Expression of one's emotions and intelligence, moods and reflections, perspective and vision on a canvas and then artfully dallying in brushstrokes is no joke. A painter is blessed with a deeper understanding of life. After all, brush strokes in bold and soft touches are just unique impressions of what he feels about the world. For him, it defines the microcosm of life.

Now oil painting is essentially a medium that uses a pigment processed through the drying medium of oil. More generally it uses canvas as a surface. In fact canvas and oil are the most celebrated surface and medium in the world. Oil paintings thrive on using canvas made from linen or cotton and the modern painters unlike painters from the past use the texture of the canvas to contrast the oil paint.

Figurative oil paintings are a more modern representation of the art form. It uses figures as an expression of human emotions. The contours are given a wide range through the use of oil. In fact, figurative oil paintings are many layered. The under layering is done through turpentine oil. Figurative oil paintings use the innate expression of human form to come with the right kind of emotional mix.

Canvas used for such paintings are coated with primer. This is because cotton tends to stretch a lot in natural forms thus stretching the contours of the figure. Nude and semi-nude portraits rely heavily on proportion. In the event of undue stretching, the figures get distorted. Most of the original figurative oil paintings are supplied mounted on a non-reflective glass. Artworks can be framed or unframed depending upon the needs established by a painter's work.

Figurative oil paintings have been a rage. The work of oil on canvas through bold strokes from a hog's bristle and soft strokes from miniver usually helps in putting acute symmetry in place. This helps a painting attain just the right kind of spirit. Figurative oil painting is a niche genre that has been established relatively late on the scene. At the same time, experimentations were being done even in the renaissance period.

In those times, oil medium was prepared by boiling a mixture of linseed and resin. This resulted in creating the right kind of varnish. The figurative oil paintings made through this were passed through many layers. The oil paintings do not dry very quickly and hence the creators of figurative oil paintings need to be very perseverant. A shade applied over existing shade can mar the effect completely unless it dries out.

Figurative oil paintings can be subtly erotic and tastefully sensual. Anatomical precision is sought more than anything else while making these kinds of paintings. A connoisseur can very quickly find the loopholes for such paintings if there are any.
