If you get a captain's style bed, it will have a set of drawers underneath that will allow you space to tuck more things away without it taking away from the open look of the room.

Don't forget the accents. Even once you have decided on the larger pieces for your bedroom, you are going to need other things, like lighting, and possibly a small table or chair. Take these items into account as you figure out just how much space is available.
