Here's a starting draft of a letter that I send to people in my community. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////// Dear (name of manager in a Local Business),
I am a teacher at a local middle school. I'm writing to you because I believe you will be interested to learn more about our school and how your business will benefit by supporting us in a very easy way: with your story.
I am interested in bringing interesting people into our middle school to inspire kids to see the connection between their studies and their future work. How is math used in your work? How did school work help you prepare for your exciting and interesting work as a graphic arts firm with web marketing? How did you continue to study after you left university?
These are the types of questions that engage my students. You can see more at my site about mentors on video www.geocities.com/talkinternational1/mentorsonvideo
I hope you will become a mentor on video! (If you can't find time to visit our school, please contact me so I can guide you in making the short video for our Mentors program. I'll even drive over and make the video for you?)
OLD COMPUTERS? We are also in the process of updating our computer center. If you have an older model computer, we will be happy to pick it up and give you a letter of appreciation to show that you donated a computer to a non-profit organization.
Downtown Academy of Technology and Arts www.downtownacademy.org is dedicated to preparing local kids to compete globally and to help them find their place in the globalized marketplace. Your assistance will help us help them. Please find out more by calling the Principal David Jett at 954 767 0403.
Thanks for your time.

With the current economy and unstable employment rate, many consumers are looking to give their patronage to local businesses. By shopping at local and nearby companies, consumers are not only saving money on gas, but also avoiding spending at larger corporations that don't necessarily need the extra business.
For example, it would be incredibly easy to drop by your local Starbucks or fast food restaurant for a quick bite to eat, or a $4 cup of coffee. These major incorporated businesses have storefronts all over the nation, shareholders that are willing to invest a large amount of money, and stocks to play with on the stock market. However, spending at your local independent business will not only give you a variety in your meal choices, but also promote a healthy bond between local residents and business owners.
ZipWeb is a great resource to find local businesses in your area. From your local dry cleaner, authentic Italian restaurant, or independent smoothie shop, ZipWeb provides a great listing of your area's favorite businesses within a short distance. The website also provides businesses that are within walking distance of your area. You will never come across major corporations in the search engine results, so you are guaranteed to find out about new and not-so-mainstream brick and mortar companies that you may have otherwise overlooked.
If you are a local business owner in your area, you may also want to consider including a listing of your business on the search engine so that other residents can stumble across your company. The website will provide your company name, phone number and physical address. ZipWeb can also assist in your web hosting, Internet PR and website construction as part of being their client. Look into these services to promote the well-being of your local neighborhood.
