[C1124]Costumes & Fancy Dress
by Adele Wiseman, Ade
There days people are more conscious about their how they dress up for different theme parties. No wonder, there has been a significant increase in number of fancy dress costume shops in a very short span of time. Even the trend of buying fancy costumes has moved from the high street to online shops. When it comes to ladies costumes, there are no dearth of varieties, styles, mix-n-match color and other fancy dress accessories available.

Ladies costumes available over the high street shops usually have designs copied from your favorite movie stars or any hot trend shown in popular magazines. No doubt, that's make a fashion statement. But imagine wearing the same fancy costume which half a dozen other people are also going to wear for Halloween or Christmas party! You have to look for ideas outside the box so that you can wow your party guests with your dress sense. Many of us especially women love to dress uniquely so that they can be the center of attention of any theme party. Online shops with their creative fancy dress costumes designs make unique fashion statements.

Ladies costumes for theme parties can be wacky, naughty, raunchy and sexy. It's your choice what type to pick as per the occasion of the fancy costume party. For instance, how about the idea of dressing like a vampire baby for a Halloween party! Imagine yourself in full-size skin-toned body tights, white face paint, a pair of fangs and a large blanket for a diaper. You can even be more creative with a baby bottle accessory filled with deep red cranberry juice. Another wacky way of dressing is like the cross-dressing Darth Vader from the popular Star Wars series.

If the theme party is for adults only, ladies costumes can be a bit raunchy or sexy. You can dress like female Hugh Hefner and come up posing with your male friends dressed up as playboy bunnies! Ideas like this will surely turn the head of everyone's present in the party to you and in that way your purpose of getting attention as well as entertaining your guests will be satisfied. And if you have a great sense of humor, then you can even give a pleasant surprise to others by dressing up your pet in a fancy costume.

There are various types of ladies costumes available. Starting from period costumes, fairytale outfits, Wild West costumes to raunchy retro outfits, dancer costumes, pirates costumes, film and TV costumes, and extra sexy costumes; the choice can be many. Retro look of the 50s and 60s are also quite popular among theme-party goers. Moreover, the fancy ladies outfits are available in all sizes, even in plus size! And in most cases, they are a perfect fit. In addition, accessories like masks, wigs and other such ensembles highlight the fancy costumes even more.

Fancy dress is one of those things that can so easily go wrong. Take the case of Colin Terry whose very poor fancy dress costume choice may cost him his reputation. Mr Terry is a Chief Superintendent with Devon and Cornwall police who has been serving in Afghanistan as an advisor to the Afghan Government, on counter terrorism issues. His fancy dress costume choice of wearing an Osama Bin Laden outfit and mask to a summer carnival parade in his home town in Cornwall was meant as an in-joke for his friends to guess who he was, as he travelled past on the parade. Unfortunately for Mr Terry the joke backfired when a local journalist photographed his fancy dress costume choice. Mr Terry has had a complaint about him made to Police Complaints Commission, and the police force in Devon and Cornwall have condemned his poor costume choice.

This is not a one-off case of poor judgement, cast your mind back to 2005 when Prince Harry decided to go to a ?colonials and natives? fancy dress party as a Nazi soldier in desert uniform. This poor choice landed him in hot water with the public and press, and lead a former minister for the armed forces Doug Henderson to claim that the prince was obviously not suitable to take up a place at the Sandhurst Military Academy. If only he had followed his older brothers fancy dress lead, and gone as a lion.

The organisers of parties can also get things very wrong. Take the Converso Call Centre in Southend that regularly organises employee events including fancy dress parties. One of their events had a cops and robbers themed event. Unfortunately a member of the public saw two of the fancy dress wearing revellers arriving. Normally this would not be a issue, but this particular member of the public described the 2 armed men dressed in dark clothing entering an office building after hours, to the local police. Having a police armed response unit raid your office fancy dress party certainly makes it a night to remember, but for all the wrong reasons.

Southend has had problems like this before when local man Lawrence Corcoran attended a fancy dress party dressed as Rambo. At the end of the party Mr Corcoran invited some friends back to his house to continue the celebrations. Unfortunately walking down the street on the way back to his house Mr Corcoran was seen waving his toy gun at friends and also aimed it at passing vehicles, some of which swerved out of the line of fire. The party ended abruptly when 2 armed response teams and police dog handlers arrived, shutting the street and ordering everyone out of the house. Mr Corcoran was ordered by magistrates to do eighty hours of community service and pay a sixty pound fine.

Few people could ever get it as mixed a response to their fancy dress costume as a tory party councilor for Barnet, Brian Gordon. Mr Gordon is a big fan of Fancy Dress, having dressed up as a number of famous political leaders including Ronald Regan, Boris Yeltsin and Ariel Sharon. Unusual fancy dress choices, but nothing distasteful about them. The problem occurs when you add Nelson Mandela to the list, and black up in the process. Mr Gordon thought little of it and even had a picture taken and sent it to the local press himself. When questions were raised about whether it was right for a local councilor to black up, Mr Gordon confronted his critics saying he always dresses as world leaders at fancy dress parties and surely it would be racist to exclude Nelson Mandela from his choices just because he is black.

The errors are clear, but not to the fancy dress wearers at the time. It's ok to dress up and make a fool of yourself but don't go into controversial subjects. If you must go as a soldier choose an allied soldier not Nazi, if you must go as a terrorist try Guy Fawkes not Osama, and most of all leave the guns behind.
