[A189]Acid Reflux Burning Throat
by P. Bowlin, P.
Acid reflux pillows help people who suffer from this painful disorder be able to sleep comfortably and awaken without painful burning in their chest- or worse. I've been rudely awakened in the middle of the night with an incredibly painful burning sensation in my throat, with acids almost coming up from where they shouldn't. Disgusting and pretty scary too. If you've gone through this too, and your doctor has told you that you have acid reflux, or GERD, then this pillow may really help you.

Stomach acid is able to escape into the esophagus when the valve controlling the stomach opening does not work properly for whatever reason.

This can be the result of age, poor health, lack of muscle condition, or even eating too close to bed time.

An acid reflux pillow is a simple, low angle wedge of foam especially designs to hold the upper body up just enough to allow gravity to hold stomach acid in place. These pillows are not the wedge "lounge" pillows that you may have at home. Those wedges will hold your upper body much too high and possibly prevent sound sleep. The low angle wedge of a pillow designed specifically for acid reflux patients will allow you to sleep soundly without being in an upright, uncomfortable position.

Another difference between standard lounge wedges and the pillow designed for acid reflux is that the wedge lifts the body from near the hip rather than just holding up the shoulders. The long, slim wedge shape of a pillow used for acid reflux control can make your life so much better and the prices are very affordable!

You can usually fit your reflux pillow into a standard king size pillow case and sleep peacefully knowing that there won't be any painful burning waking you up in the middle of the night.

Left untreated, acid reflux can potentially damage the lining of the esophagus while also causing damage to the teeth and mouth and possibly the lungs. It can also cause a stinging sensation in your chest that people call heartburn. Chronic conditions, such as acid reflux, must be treated for as long as possible. Stopping treatment would mean a return of symptoms and damage. If left untreated, it very well could lead to other major problems including death.

Just because someone has heartburn does not necessarily mean they have acid reflux. Many medications are available over the counter to stem heartburn. If the heartburn presents more than twice a week then you should seek help from a physician because acid reflux may have developed.

Controlling Acid Reflux Symptoms

Many lifestyle changes should be made for someone who suffers from acid reflux. A change in diet for example, could mean the world. Your stomach produces acids to aid in digestion. Do not eat right before you go to bed. In fact, it is a good idea to wait at least two to three hours after eating to even lie down. This is also true for napping during the day.

Eating smaller meals throughout the day as opposed to eating big meals can be a huge help for acid reflux symptoms. The amount of acid being produced will drop when you stop eating so much acidic foods. These tips are also good for weight loss. Eat less fatty foods and consume less caffeine, cut down on coffee and sodas for maximum impact against acid reflux. Tomatoes and other spicy foods should also be avoided.

Tabbaco and alcohol only exacerbate the problem. If you must drink, drink sparingly, regular drinking can lead to an increase in acid reflux problems. When in bed, try and keep your head elevated. That way it is harder for acid to come up through the esophagus. Good posture can prevent some acid reflux as well as keep away muscle pain. The more you know about acid reflux, the more you can do to stop it.
