by Bryan R Abel, Bry
Chinese herbal medicine provides an alternate and holistic system of treatment and cure to a plethora of ailments with minimal side effects. As more and more people are opting for a more natural lifestyle, Chinese herbal remedies are fast gaining popularity. Based on the larger principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, it supports radically different principles on notions of health illness and working of the body than that of tradition Western medicine. Chinese herbs are prescribed to normalize imbalanced energy, or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), that runs through invisible meridians in the body. Scientific researches are establishing conclusively the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicines in treating a range of disorders, particularly gynaecological and gastrointestinal disorders.

Chinese herbs are being increasingly used to treat diseases like, Digestive problems, Eczema and psoriasis, Fatigue, Gynaecological disorders, Hepatic (liver) disorders, Cardiovascular disorders, Stress and Allergies and autoimmune disorders effectively. Chinese herbal medicines are mainly plant based, but some preparations include minerals or animal products. They can be packaged as powders, pastes, lotions or tablets, depending on the herb and its intended use. Different herbs have different properties and can balance particular parts of the body. Unlike western herbal medicine which treats on the basis of symptoms, Chinese herbal medicine is based on individual diagnosis.

There are two main curative methods in acupuncture - one uses needles, and the other uses fire. Both methods are effective, and are frequently used in conjunction to cure illnesses.

It is interesting to note that acupuncture Chinese moxibustion refers to the fire cure. Zhen Jiu which is the Chinese name for acupuncture is made up of Zhen meaning needle, and Jiu which refers to fire.

There are many famous legends pertaining to acupuncture and moxibustion. Two of the frequently quoted ones are Fu Xi creation of the therapeutic stone needles, and Huang Di invention of moxibustion and acupuncture.

It is interesting to note that the acupuncture Chinese moxibustion technique actually started with a housewife! She actually found relief for her aching body while cooking at the stove! This time period of the discovery was known as the Eolithic age, and over time, this method was fine tuned with herbal medicines being added to increase its curative effects.

There are 2 common moxibustion methods. They are moxa cone and cupping. The fundamental idea is to use a glass jar to suck the body by putting fire in the jar. As the fire is removed, the glass jar is quickly place over the affected body part so that the jar will suck the body and stimulate blood flow.

As in cupping, the moxa cone was also used for the same effect. As explained, the fire in the jar forces the air to heat up and leaves the jar since hot air rises. This results in a powerful almost vacuum like space in the jar which causes the jar to suck the body. This impact, although results in some pain, is especially powerful in stimulating blood flow. Moreover, the internal organs also benefit from some sort of massage.

One of the key factors that decide the efficacy or effectiveness of the acupuncture Chinese moxibustion is the positioning of the thick glass jar. As you probably know, another important factor of acupuncture is the acupuncture points or meridian points of the body. As such, the jar must be placed according to the points whereby the illness is supposed to be healed.

Sometimes, medicinal herbs as well as ginger and mashed garlic are added for the treatment. Typically, the jar will cup the body for about 15 to 20 minutes. Moreover, the treatment has to be conducted over a period of time.

Since the ancient times, the acupuncture Chinese moxibustion technologies have improved. During modern times, potential equipment setup include acupoint injection, acupoint magnetotherapy, electronic needle moxibustion and microwave needle moxibustion.
