It is necessary to choose the right radiator for your home. This is due to the fact that radiators will influence the comfort, appearance and cosiness of your household. So even if radiators are often considered as background accessories, it is necessary to choose the right radiator as this will affect not only your utility bills but also the temperature of each of your room. Thus, before considering having your heating system refurbished, one should choose the right radiators available for your home.
Panel radiators
Most UK households have panel radiators installed. Made of corrugated steel and generally painted plain white, these serviceable pieces of heating equipment are both cheap and practical. They come in a number of varieties, including single panel, double panel, and convector types. If you want to go with this cheaper option but are keen to spice up your home a little, consider painting your panel radiators in an unusual colour with heat-proof paint.
Bending radiators
If you need to fit a radiator into a tricky spot ? for example under an alcove window ? then look for manufacturers who offer bending radiators. Being made to measure these devices tend to be slightly more expensive than traditional panel radiators, but they can certainly confer a certain something upon an unusual room.
Tubular radiators
Ideal for bathrooms or minimalist households, tubular steel or column radiators provide an alternative means of heating your home. They can add a stylish touch to any design scheme, but are generally less effective at circulating heat than panel radiators.
Electric radiators
If you have a flat or apartment, you may find it more economical to use electrical radiators rather than central heating. An electricity company like British Gas will be able to advise you comprehensively on a suitable heating method for your home.
Designer radiators
Those with a little cash to splash may want to think about investing in a designer radiator. Radiators now come in anything from minimalistic styles to animal shapes ? you'd be amazed at what some ingenious designers can do with metal tubes and panels. Stone and glass radiators are currently top of every fashionista's wish list ? despite taking a little while to heat up they provide an effective method of heating. Perfect proof that radiators truly can be an interesting topic.
Back-of-door organizer The back of a door that opens into a utility room or closet makes a handy hanging space. The trouble is that most doors don't offer a good mounting surface for hardware. The solution is to screw a piece of 3/4-in. plywood to the back of the door. Add construction adhesive for hollow-core doors. Cut the plywood 3 or 4 in. shy of the door edges to avoid conflicts with the doorknob or hinges. Now you can mount as many hooks, magnets and other storage gizmos as you like. Tall Closet Shelves There's a lot of space above the shelf in most closets. Even though it's a little hard to reach, it's a great place to store seldom-used items. Make use of this wasted space by adding a second shelf above the existing one. Buy enough closet shelving material to match the length of the existing shelf plus enough for two end supports and middle supports over each bracket. Twelve-inch-wide shelving (about $9 for an 8-ft. length) is available in various lengths and finishes at home centers and lumberyards. We cut the supports 16 in. long, but you can place the second shelf at whatever height you like. Screw the end supports to the walls at each end. Use drywall anchors if you can't hit a stud. Then mark the position of the middle supports onto the top and bottom shelves with a square and drill 5/32-in. clearance holes through the shelves. Drive 1-5/8-in. screws through the shelf into the supports. Joist Space-saver Shelves Don't waste all that space between joists in a basement or garage. Screw wire shelving to the underside of the joists. An 8-ft. x 16-in. length of wire shelving and a pack of plastic clips (sold separately) costs $21. Screw a wire closet shelf to the underside of joists to create a shelf that's strong, easy to see through and won't collect dust.
