Days of Our Lives' James Scott has recently joined the bandwagon of spokespersons for earth-friendly campaigns and organizations. The 28-year-old actor is actually a co-founder of Urth Solution, an organization aimed at helping developing countries capitalize on their natural resources without damaging the environment. He has been all around the world to communicate with these countries in behalf of Urth Solutions.
"I was thinking about doing something like this for a few years," Scott said in a conversation with Soap Opera Digest. "It's good to carry some sort of certification of being Green. I thought I'd try and find a company that would help communities in resource-rich areas to be able to harness those resources in a sustainable way then sell them for a premium to the West. It's basically about helping communities help themselves. 'Trade not aid.'"
James Scott, who plays EJ Wells on Days of Our Lives, was proud to say that Urth Solution was very well received, having been established a year ago.
The beaming actor said, "Urth Solution helps communities in developing countries find ways to address social, environmental and humanitarian issues."
Scott recently flew to Bolivia to represent the company and help a community richly blessed with gold. Scott told Soap Opera Digest that they would like to teach the community how to extract the precious element without hurting the environment.
"We're investing in a program to help the residents of that community mine the gold in an environmentally sustainable way, so that we can generate profits for the community," James Scott explained.
Urth Solutions has also been to Madagascar, where they have a current project. They also plan to expand their outreach even further.
"I'm going to Mongolia in September," Scott said to Soap Opera Digest. "I have been asked by World Bank to go and give a small presentation on my company, which they see as being a fairly good model for progressive businesses."
The fourth winner of SoapNet's I Wanna Be A Soapstar was given a chance to be on NBC's Days of Our Lives, as previously reported. Series actor Bryan Dattilo and talent manager Michael Bruno went to Navy Pier in Chicago last month to search for aspiring individuals to compete for a spot in a daytime drama.
In talking about the search, which was part of I Wanna Be A Soap Star's live nationwide tour, Bruno said, "It's not necessarily their look, it's their energy we're judging. How bad they want to be a soap star."
As Bryan Dattilo appeared in front of the huge crowd, aspiring female contestants went into a screaming frenzy.
"I don't think I can do this," Micheline Magharious said nervously, as other fellow competitors acted in front of the judges. The 34-year-old Days of Our Lives fan even rushed to Dattilo to get his autograph upon his arrival.
Magharious and Dattilo had their picture taken and subsequently a Hammond native Phyllis Ihnit mistook the 36-year-old actor with his on-screen persona, Lucas Roberts and said, "I'm glad the twins are yours!"
Only 30 out of 158 people were chosen to perform on stage, and each of them were given different scenarios which bordered on the ridiculous. At the end of the search, 27-year-old Mildred Langford, Chicago stage actress who also religiously followed General Hospital, emerged victorious.
Langford is now set to compete in October against five other finalists from various cities for the walk-on role on Days of Our Lives.
Bryan Dattilo, who started playing Lucas on the soap in 1993, shared some insights on what it takes to be a real soap actor/actress.
"You have to be able to give your life over to it," he said in a conversation with The Chicago Tribune. "Sometimes you're filming three shows a day. You have to have a sharp memory, be confident and be able to ad lib."
"It's probably the hardest job in acting. You grab your lunch and your hard hat and you work every day," he added.
