[D166]Dental Plan For Braces
by Cory Kemp, Cor
Discount dental plans are fast becoming the number one alternative to traditional dental insurance. With more than 108 million Americans currently without some form of dental care coverage, it is more important than ever before that we dicuss the benefits of discount dental plans. Traditional dental insurance is virtually unaffordable if not provided by an employer. Therefore, individuals and families must have an alternative. For many, the perfect alternative is a discount dental plan. Discount dental plans offer flexible, convenient coverage that dental insurance policies lack. They're also very affordable.Top 5 Discount Dental Plan Benefits:1) AffordableDiscount dental plans are considerably more affordable than traditional dental insurance. A typical individual discount dental plan will cost you around $79.95, while a family plan will start at around $120. In a report released in 2005 by the National Association of Dental Plans, the average monthly premium paid for individual HMO dental insurance(Traditional) was nearly $16/month, or about $192/year, compared to even more($288/year) for individual PPO dental insurance and a whopping $372/year for individual indemnity insurance. As traditional dental insurance rates continue to rise at astonishing rates, discount dental plan rates do not. In fact, the NADP states, "Discount dental plans have become an economical and important alternative to combat the rising cost of health care. They are a cost-effective vehicle for millions of underserved consumers to improve their access to dental care."2) No Health RestrictionsUnlike some dental insurance providers, discount dental plan providers do not impose sometimes unfair health restrictions on members. In other words, you will receive the discount afforded to you according to your discount dental plan's fee schedule if you have health problems or not. It is not uncommon for lower income people to suffer from untreated ailments, thus making a discount dental plan the only option in some cases.3) No Paperwork to Fill OutNobody likes arriving at the dentist only to spend 15 minutes filling out lengthy medical history and claim forms. With discount dental plans the only paperwork you fill out is the paperwork required to purchase your plan. Claim forms don't even enter the equation.4) Quick ActivationIf you've ever tried to enroll with an insurance provider, you know that the wait can be unbearable - especially if you're in immediate need of insured care. Discount dental plans, on the other hand often activate within 1-3 days, depending on the provider you enroll with. Within this time period, a discount card is mailed out to you, and you are often provided with immediate access to plan information, including fee schedules, and local participating dentists.5) Direct Access for Individuals, Families, and GroupsTraditional dental insurance is rarely directly accessable to the general public - in terms of either policy or expense. However, discount dental plans are available directly to the general public. You can access and enroll in a plan right over the web in most cases. This is true for individuals, families, and groups alike. In fact, one of the largest segments of dental plan enrollees belongs to small businesses who find traditional dental insurance unaffordable. The National Association of Dental Plans (NADP) considers discount dental plans as a viable, cost-effective alternative: "With an estimated 45 percent of Americans not having any type of dental coverage, and the dental insurance marketplace offering few, affordable dental products for individuals, discount dental plans are an attractive answer to the need to reduce consumer out-of-pocket costs and increase access to care."

Are you having trouble finding an affordable dental plan? Join the crowd. You know, it seems that all the dental insurance companies want to do is collect their monthly premiums and then, when it comes time to pay for something substantial, spring the old "sorry, but you've got a twelve month waiting period before we can cover that condition" excuse. In other words, "no pre-existing conditions". Sorry about your luck.

I'm wondering what the point is of having it in the first place if they won't cover a "pre-existing" condition? Basicall, what I'm being told is to buy dental insurance in advance of having a problem. This way I'll have "some" coverage down the road when I need it. Hmmmmm. Let me do some quick math here. The average cost of dental insurance is around fifty dollars a month for an individual and one hundred for a family. Outrageous prices. So let's go ahead and do the math as an "individual" and cut them a bit of a break here.

Let's say that I have a toothache and need to have it pulled (extracted). The average cost for this is around $150.00-$200.00, depending on which part of the country that you live in. So basically I'm being told to wait twelve months and pay $600.00 in dental insurance premiums in order to have a procedure covered that only costs, at most, one third of that? Oh, by the way. The insurance doesn't cover the entire procedure. I still have to pay a twenty percent deductable before I could be seen. Gee, I'm happy. Talk about a crock!

So is there really such a thing as an affordable dental plan? Maybe, but I'm going to let you be the judge.

There is another option available, other than dental insurance, called dental discount plans. These plans have been hyped up quite a bit over the last few years as a great deal, but I decided to look into them for mysels so I could make an "educated" decision. This is what I've found.

Discount dental plans are, for one thing, affordable. Most plans cost less than $20.00 a month per family and even less for individual coverage. "Discount Plans" are exactly what they say they are, a discount plan, not insurance.

This is how dental discount plans work.

First, you join their plan. This enables you to see any dentist within their network. These dentists are as professional as any that you've ever seen in your life. As a matter of fact, YOUR dentist may already be a provider.

Discount plans simply offer you a much better price for each procedure, but the catch is that you must pay for the procedure at the time of your visit. No billing the insurance company, no deductibles, no age limits, no exclusions and pre-existing conditions are no problem. Dentists find that it's a good deal because they get paid cash on the spot instead of having to pay their accountant to bill the insurance company for their money and wait up to 45 days for payment.

Also, a network of several thousand dentists means buying power! They also take advantage of some great savings on equipment that they must have in order to operate their practice.

So there it is. Is this an affordable dental plan or do you think it's a scam of some kind? I'll let you be the judge of that.
