[D193]Design And Construction Process
by Stephan Uys, Ste

Step 1: Initiation

In this phase I get to know your requirements and I convert your “inputs” into “guidelines and references” for the project. I establish the size and scope of your project and determine the amount of work that needs to be done.

I then quote you based upon everything that needs to be done. Upon acceptance of quote (note, I say acceptance of quote, not payment of quote) I will present you with some design proposals so you can choose what your site is going to look like even before you have paid for it.

It is a proven fact that different people imagine what the site is going to be like on widely different conceptual platforms. The most important job is to understand your conceptual built, and to analyze the mental model of the users of the site and then to get to a mutual understanding of the process forward. What I have in mind for your site and what you have in mind may be 2 completely different things, so I want us on the same page before I even start.

It is always difficult to convey an idea or design concept in words.

Therefore I undertake the following sub-steps to gather a broad outlook of the design:

1.1 Ask you the most basic questions through initial emails to know about your business, your competitors and peer companies in your industry.

1.2 Then I ask you to look at some design concepts and choose a design concept that you like most. Based on this, I will then design your website.

Once you have accepted the quote and chosen a design concept I will invoice you for 50% of the total. Upon acceptance I will move onto step two:

Step 2: Design & programming

In this phase, we do the actual design work. This is the longest phase due to the “iterative” workflow.

2.1 Plan the website and prepare site-map, test plan and integration plan

2.2 Prepare a mock-up of the site design and send it for your comments

2.3 Based on your feedback I modify the site design and resend it to you for your comments

(If satisfied, we move on to step 2.4, else we go back to step 2.3. This iteration continues and we keep working until you are satisfied with the design)

2.4 Once the mock-up is approved I convert it into the home page design with all required programming and flash animation for giving the dynamic look and feel of the website. The same is sent for your comments.

2.5 Upon approval, I design the inside pages of the website and send it for your comments. I carry out the final refinements based on your and my own inputs until the site is complete.

2.6 Your site is tested and checked for errors.

This phase is signed off with a complete design of the site including scripting, animations and all relevant design elements. I invoice you for the balance and upon receival publish your website to the Net.

Step 3: Marketing Your Site

Once the website is complete and live on air, I start with additional website marketing services such as directory link service or pay per click campaigns as necessary and as part of the initial order.

Points to consider:

The above process might look a bit extensive but once we get going it is not that bad, trust me, I will guide you each step of the way.
