[D174]Department Of Health Environment

Today, the growing awareness of various environment related issues have led companies to come up with numerous ways to reduce the carbon content in different materials whether related to manufacturing, agriculture, construction, transport or services. There are also many other harmful chemicals and gases, which are released into the atmosphere in some way or other. As a result, there are many companies that are continuously coming up with eco-friendly products. One such product is organic food.

Organic food serves the twin purpose of taking care of our health and also that of our environment. This is because, organic food crops, vegetables and fruits grains are grown without using any chemical based fertilisers, pesticides or synthetic herbicides. On the other hand, the normal food grains, vegetables and even fruits that are available in markets make use of these chemicals, which adversely affect our health. Pesticides contain harmful substances which are capable of harming humans as much as they do to pests. The best way to keep your body free of all such harmful chemicals is by eating organic food. Organic food is also devoid of artificial flavour, colour, preservatives, and genetically modified ingredients, which do no good to your health.

Organic food are grown with the help of organic manure and natural pesticides without any chemical content. As a result, they do not pollute groundwater. In most cases, the chemical content of pesticides and fertilisers seep into the groundwater, thus contaminating it. This may prove to be a big blow to our eco-system. That is not all. The use of harsh chemicals while growing food may also affect the fertility of soil. On the other hand, organic food items are grown using natural methods, which do not pose any threat to the soil fertility.

As there are many less number of companies that produce organic food, the price of such food items may be slightly on the higher side. Also, as these food items are grown in a natural way without the use of any artificial, productivity-increasing technique, the quantity of the produce may be less as opposed to food crops grown using chemicals. This is also another reason behind their higher price. However, you should not mind paying those extra few pounds, where your health and environment are concerned.

If you are looking forward to know more about organic food, eco house and hybrid cars, visit the Exo Expo, 2008 at RDS, Dublin. The expo will also exhibit various other eco-friendly products and techniques, including mechanisms and materials that may turn your house into an eco friendly house.
