[E165]Electric Comb Binding Machine
by Jeff McRitchie, Jef

The GBC CombBind C450e is a great choice in plastic comb binding systems. It has an electric punch and an array of other great features that make binding quick and simple across a variety of different applications. The GBC CombBind C450 is the only plastic comb-binding system with all of these features housed in the same machine, differentiating it from others in its category. This is not surprising, however, when you consider that GBC is the world's original binder manufacturer.

The CombBind C450's electric punch mechanism can handle up to 25 sheets per punch (22 per punch more conservatively). This unique system can also punch through up to 2 plastic covers simultaneously, saving time and money on productivity. The C450 also has a state-of-the-art auto-centering system, making it simple to align documents during the binding process. All of these features help make the C450 an easy and versatile option.

Additionally, the newly-designed document separator gives you the ability to divide sheets into sections that are very simple to punch, which is a superb feature for someone who want to use the CombBind C450 for occasional projects. If you create higher volume projects, more often, this may not be quite as helpful to you, and you may want to consider a binding system made especially for high-volume applications.

The C450 does an excellent job binding projects with plastic combs that are between ΒΌ" and 2" in diameter, giving it some versatility in document size. The CombBind C450 has an efficient, attractive compact design, causing it to look as good as it works. Although not critical, style is a feature often ignored by other binding system makers.

The CombBind C450 is effective in a variety of situations and applications but is not completely without limitations. For instance, without a depth-of-punch control, the machine doesn't allow you to decide how far you want the holes from the edge of the paper of your document. This can make set-ups quite complicated. Additionally, the C450 does not have disengageable dies, which can aid in binding custom-sized projects - and without open throat design, no pieces over 11 inches in length can be punched. A4 documents and legal sized sheets are no exception, which can make the C450 impractical depending on your needs.

One consideration that many people overlook is that the C450e's rotary comb opener is not as easy to use a standard comb openers, though it can be mastered with a little practice. All of the pros and cons of the CombBind C450 should be carefully compared to other binding systems in its class before you make your final decision.

As previously mentioned, the C450 is mostly made of plastic, making it stylish, but less durable than all-metal component, potentially causing an issue for higher volume applications in which the machine is used again and again. Additionally, new features, like the document separator and auto centering device may be a plus, but they are as of yet unproven for durability under continued use and this must be considered as your binding equipment decision is made.

Even with a few limitations, however, the stylish and convenient CombBind C450 plastic comb binder is a great choice for medium usage applications that are large enough to benefit from the convenience of an electric punch mechanism. The C450 increases productivity and makes the binding process a great deal easier. So if you want a great-functioning binding system at an equally great value, the GBC CombBind C450 is a good bet for a variety of situations.

* The Fellowes Pulsar-E is the least expensive electric plastic comb binding machine that is offered by Fellowes.

* It is an electric version of the manual Pulsar 300 comb binding machine with virtually all of the same features.

* This machine has a distinctive and stylish contemporary look that is designed to fit inside a small or medium sized office environment.

Strengths / Features:

* The Fellowes Pulsar E offers a sleek, smooth design that folds closed when the machine is not in use. This makes it easy to store the machine and helps the machine blend in with other office equipment inside your organization. Since this machine has an electric punching mechanism, it doesn't need a punching handle. This makes Pulsar-E even more compact and makes it less obtrusive.

* This machine offers a slide out drawer that will hold plastic binding combs for easy accessability. This slide out drawer also has a measuring device that allows you to measure the size of the combs inside the drawer. The measuring guide also allows you to select the correct size of comb for your document or project.

* This machine offers a punching capacity of 15 sheets per punch. Although there are many binding machines available on the market that can punch than the Pulsar-E, for the price this is a very respectable punching capacity. Plus, the electric punching mechanism allows you to increase productivity in punching and binding your documents.

* The comb opener included on the Fellowes Pulsar Electric binding machine uses metal hooks and metal fingers. When looking for a low end binding machine, it is important to choose one with a metal comb opener. Comb binding machines that use plastic comb openers will easily break leaving the machine virtually useless.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

* One limitation of this machine is that the comb opener is only designed to handle plastic combs up to 1-1/2" in diameter. Plastic comb binding spines are available in sizes up to 2 inches. However, the Pulsar-E is not compatible with 1-3/4" or 2" plastic binding combs. Organizations that need to bind documents with these large thicknesses will really need to consider a larger comb binding machine.

* This machine is designed for binding 8.5" x 11" letter size documents. Although this is adequate for many organizations, this machine is not a good fit for users who need to punch or bind other sheet sizes. Companies who need to bind half letter sized sheets, legal sized documents or A4 length documents will need to choose a binding machine with disengageable punching pins.

* Although this binding machine is electric and offers a great design, it is important to remember that it is still made primarily out of plastic. This unit is designed for small and medium sized offices that do occasional binding. High volume users really need to consider a larger, more durable binding system with industrial metal components.

Recommendation:

* The Pulsar-E electric comb binding machine is an excellent choice for small and medium sized offices.

* This machine offers a compact, sleek design that will blend into an office environment.

* However, larger offices or higher volume users will most likely find this machine is too small to meet their needs.

* It is also not a good choice for organizations that need to bind thick documents or custom sized sheets.
