[E173]Electrical And Lighting Supplies
by Kimberly Quang, Kim
As a business owner, you know how important the lighting systems are to your company. There are many roles filled by commercial lights. They add to the safety, practical, and aesthetic components of your business, but if you are installing these yourself, you will need to find the right commercial lighting supplies in order to properly mount and wire them. The size of your business does not matter if you need lighting. All workplaces will need to be lit. This is for the safety of your employees and customers. Commercial lighting supplies can provide you with the hardware and accessories you need in order to self install a myriad of lighting choices.

Types of commercial lighting supplies you might find a need for could include commercial parking lot light poles. These are necessary for mounting outdoor street lights and other types of exterior lighting. For light poles you need to determine how you will mount them. The mounting accessories for poles are also vital supplies. Some poles can simply be put into a gravel-lined hole in the ground. This is a simple embedding, and it is the easiest and most common method. There are other mounting options for decorative light poles as well which require the use of a poured concrete foundation. Take a look at your light pole and the lamp you intend to affix to it. The lamp attached to the pole will require wiring to render it fully functional. The height of the pole, type of lamp, and the bulb will determine the supplies you will need to wire it.

If you operate a warehouse, you might need commercial lighting supplies such as flood lights or commercial emergency lights. These are for the safety of your employees. They also provide for a productive work environment. The supplies required to install these will be dependent upon the type of light and the bulbs used. You will want to look for energy efficient lamps or Lutron dimmer control switches as they will save you money in the long run by lowering your electric costs. The area for the lamps to be installed in will also dictate the amount of light required. In work areas, you will need a lot of light and the necessary commercial lighting supplies to put them in. If the lights you will install are low voltage, you need to get a transformer of ensure that there is one in the lighting package. This applies to any low voltage path lights you will install. A transformer will act to bring the voltage of a typical outlet, which is 120 V in the United States, down to the operating level of the lamp. Most low voltage lamps are between 12 and 24 V. You can tie several lights into the transformer, but keep in mind that the sum of the wattage of all the lamps must be less than the load of the transformer.

Outdoor lighting Transformers are just one of the many commercial lighting supplies you might require. There are as many supply types as there are lighting options for your business. If you need assistance in finding the right commercial lighting supplies or are unclear about what to do with them once you have them, then you will need to consult with an expert. Professional contractors could be hired to do the job, or you could consult step by step instructional specifications designed to make installing lighting projects easy.

Wiring For Electricity

It is possible to add electricity to a shed already built, but wiring a shed is easier during the construction process. Consider wiring for electricity when building a shed, even if you don't need it immediately since it is more cost effect to add it during construction instead of waiting until later.

Plan Your Outlets

Plan the location of your electrical outlets before wiring a shed by deciding on the most convenient places to plug in equipment, tools, and other items. Keep the location of your workbench and the traffic flow of your shed in mind when making your plan for locating outlets.

Light Switch Locations

The most convenient place for an interior light switch is just inside your entry door. This keeps you from maneuvering inside your dark storage shed looking for the light switch. If you plan to install an exterior light, install the switch to operate it in the same switch plate as your interior light switch when wiring a shed.

Light Fixtures

When choosing light fixtures, keep the height of your ceiling in mind. Make sure your interior light fixture does not hang down too low or get in the way when maneuvering through your shed.

Phone And Internet Connections

Since wiring a shed is convenient during the construction process, consider adding a phone and Internet connection, even if you don't immediately need it. You never know when your storage shed may turn into the perfect home office. If the wiring is in place, transforming your shed will be simple.

Temporary Electricity

If you think you'll only require electricity on a temporary basis and don't want to go through the process of wiring a shed, consider simply plugging a durable, heavy-duty extension cord into an outlet in your home and stretching it out temporarily to your shed.

Non-Electrical Lighting

If you decide against wiring a shed, but still need lighting, consider the following non-electrical sources of lighting.

Sunlight - The natural alternative to wiring a shed is optimizing the amount of sunlight available by installing large windows in your storage shed.

Skylights - Another great way benefit from sunlight is to install skylights, placing them where you can maximize the amount of light where most needed.

Solar Lights - Powered by sunlight, a solar panel, and a battery, solar lights are not just for exterior lighting. You may have enough sunlight coming through the windows of your storage shed to power solar lighting. Another alternative is solar lamps that charge outside, but are portable so you can bring them inside your shed when you require light.

Battery Powered Lighting - Flashlights and lanterns powered by batteries can provide just the light you need inside of your storage shed. Just make sure you keep your light near the doorway of your shed so it is easily accessible and keep plenty of batteries on hand.

Crank Lighting - Crank flashlights and lanterns can also provide you with the electricity you need at the turn of a crank.
