Working With Children

Because children are so vulnerable, anyone that will be working with them in any capacity will probably be subject to a background check that includes any public criminal records. You don't necessarily need to have committed a crime against children to be excluded from this type of employment. Anyone that would commit assault or any such personal crime may be seen as a danger to someone that is powerless against them. If you have a record for drink driving, any convictione would prevent you from working with children; if your potential employer thinks that you have a problem with alcohol consumption, this can be dangerous. If you are going to be working with children as a school bus driver, driving instructor, or teacher at a school or day care center, these types of charges on the public records would be problematic. Any type of job that involves children will make you more prone to scrutiny.

Working With Money

When considering a check of public criminal records for a potential employer, companies consider those who may be working regularly with money. Those who handle cash could be cashiers, tellers at the bank, those working at a casino or anyone that handles cash for the business. But actual cash is not the only concern. Anyone with access to anyone else's financial records or to the company accounts can also be run through these public criminal records. Even a secretary with access to the department's checkbook can be checked out thoroughly in this regard. A clerk that processes orders from customers by entering their credit card, or anyone in the accounting department might also. Even someone working in their own church or religious group that may handle donations and contributions may also be subjected to a search of their public criminal records!

And it may not be actual crimes of theft that keep you from these types of jobs. Anything that may make your employer think that you are irresponsible or not trustworthy can get in the way of such positions. Whilst employers may be looking for certain convictions in the public records, depending on the industry, anything could be considered as a definite warning sign.

Other Areas of Concern

There are many types of employers that will make a habit of checking public criminal records, such as those who hire anyone that will work inside a private home (housekeepers, landscapers, contractors of any type, remodeling crews, and so on), limousine or taxi companies, security personnel, and so on. Anyone working with the elderly or in hospitals is also going to be under scrutiny, since the ones they will be working with are especially vulnerable to physical attacks, scams, and the like.

There may also be some companies that just make a habit of searching through public criminal records for all potential new hires, regardless of their position or responsibilities. In this day and age where lawsuits against companies abound, many employers feel that a policy of checking public criminal records across the board can cut down their liability for such things.

Anything that shows up on your public criminal records or background checks could prevent you from finding employment. Your employer may consider the slightest sign of dishonesty as a warning sign even if its a charge of petty theft. Sometimes anything on your public criminal record, even just unpaid parking tickets, can keep you out of the running for that job. So do yourself a favor and keep yourself out of trouble! It is harmful to yourself and others when your behaviour causes you to get convicted of a crime and then have a criminal record against you.

Everyone you talk to seems to have seen the "The Secret" DVD, or read articles about it and its message. However, not everyone seems to be of the same opinion. "The Secret" was already a sales success before Oprah did her show and publicised by Ellen DeGeneres and other well-known media people. While the high profile media seem to love the product and the whole concept of the law of attraction, some reporters and writers in daily newspapers or weekly magazines seem to take a different view.

One reporter, who admitted she had not even seen "The Secret" DVD, nonetheless felt qualified to write a long article on it and totally denigrate it. Some of her comments were that it seemed to be a re-hash of self-help books across the ages and that its core philosophy is positive thinking, loving yourself and giving yourself permission, and goes on to say "Let's stop before we gag". This reporter did watch the Oprah show however, but did not feel that Oprah's guests had "two novel ideas to rub together".

I certainly would not deny that the law of attraction has been around for as long as man has been on the earth and that various principles based on the law of attraction have been incorporated in many self-help programs over the last few decades. And certainly some of the courses which taught these principles in the past could definitely be considered to be on the "fringe".

However, what is refreshing about "The Secret" is that it brings these ideas out into the mainstream. No longer are they on the fringe, they are becoming accepted into everyday life. All the speakers who appear on the DVD are prominent leaders in their own fields but have also experienced the power of the law of attraction in their everyday lives.

The main principles as listed on "The Secret" official website are that:

"Money is magnetic energy. You are a magnet attracting to you all things, via the signal you are emitting through your thoughts and feelings. Discover how to become a powerful magnet for the creation of personal wealth."

"Relationships can be completely transformed, no matter what they're like right now. Learn how to transform every single relationship you have in your life."

"Concerned about your health? Explore ways to open yourself up and become a powerful magnet to wellness and health starting from wherever you are now."

So basically you attract to yourself what is in your thoughts that you carry around in your subconscious. However, fortunately we can have control over our subconscious and can change what is happening in our lives through visualization of what we would like to achieve or have in life.

Sure, there are going to be sceptics! But I have watched the DVD two or three times and practise visualization techniques myself. It can be hard work but fortunately there are several good programs available to help you to be successful in this process.
