[D621]Double Vs Single Action
by Jason Littlewood, Jas
1. Points to consider when ordering single sided flags

A single sided (also known as 1ply) flag means printing on one side. If the flag is screen printed or digitally printed the dye will bleed through to the other side and the image will be in reverse and be incorrect on the back side. The extent as to how much the image is seen on the other side depends on the thickness of the material and printing process used. You will find though that a 1ply or single sided flag is most commonly made.

This type of flag is also cheaper to produce because you are not using as much material also they are cheaper to buy than a double sided flag because only 1 flag is printed and sewn. Single sided flags are much lighter than the double sided flags and will not take as much wind to move them.

The lifetime of the single sided flag will depend on the material used and the weather conditions to which the flag is exposed. Due to the lightness of the fabric the flag will flap more and suffer wear and tear quicker than a double sided flag.

2. Points to consider when ordering double sided flags

A double sided flag (also known as 2ply) is 2 flags screen printed or digitally printed and then sewn together making a 2ply flag. Sometimes flags can have a middle liner between the 2 flags stopping or limiting the see through effect. This is called a 3ply flag, If the design incorporates a significant amount of white a 3 ply flag is recommended.

A 2ply (double sided) flag will have both sides (front and back) reading correct because there is no bleed through of the dye. This type of flag is more expensive than the 1ply as more colour and material is used. The weight of a 2ply flag will be twice as heavy as a 1ply and will require much more wind to move it. This type of flag will last longer and will handle more wear and tear than the 1 ply flag. A 2ply flag is not as common as a 1ply and therefore is not as cost effective.

When deciding on the type of flag required (1ply/single sided) or (2 ply/double sided) consider the use of the flag and allocated budget remember a 2ply flag will always be more expensive and heavier than a 1ply.
