[E110]Eco Friendly Reusable Bags
by Remy Lebeau, Rem
Going green isn't just a fad. It's a way of life. Our choices of shopping bags, wardrobe, food products, and even cosmetics affect the environment, either contributing or lessening our carbon footprint. Leading an environment-friendly lifestyle starts with every individual, but corporations can take this a step further by promoting green practices in the workplace.

Here are some ways to encourage green practices in the office:

Reduce carbon footprint by going energy-efficient. Promotional eco-friendly items like solar-powered calculators and crank-up flashlights offer practical benefits while encouraging users to conserve energy.

Run green promotional campaigns. Eco-friendly logo items such as recycled notepads, rulers, stadium cups, screen dusters, office clips, picture frames, and mugs build brand visibility sans the environmental impact.

Encourage employees to leave the car at home one day a week. It involves much personal sacrifice to give up the convenience of driving and taking public transportation, but doing so means lesser contribution to global warming. If leaving the car home is difficult to do, how about . . .

Make one day a week a bike-to-work day. Not only is biking a good form of exercise, it also does not emit carbon dioxide, which contributes to climate changes. Instead of driving out of town for a company outing, why not explore the locality on a bike? It's a good way to bond while getting close to nature.

Choose recycled any time. Your purchase of recycled items supports the supply chain while saving landfill space and new resources to manufacture new products. For promotional campaigns, eco-friendly home items like handy caddies, primary care thermometers, swatters, and pails are effective in building brand recognition.

Spread the word. Overhauling our high-impact lifestyle starts with one but will escalate with the support of minions. Get backup from everyone in the office. Give out promotional stickers and similar items imprinted with eco-friendly tips to people you meet. Make it a conscious effort to choose green products and encourage others to do the same.

Consider buying a “reel” mower versus a gas mower. Reel mowers are the old fashioned ones that you push yourself. Remember the one your great grandfather used to have. Save money on gas and get some exercise in at the same time. It is a nice way to spend an hour or two surrounded by your beautiful yard with the sweet smell of cut grass all around you.

When choosing plants for your yard or garden, purchase ones that are grown locally. Other plants may be beautiful, but not suited for your particular climate. Purchasing locally grown plants ensures that they will grow well in your yard or garden and help promote the local growers. When checking out your local nurseries, be sure to ask questions like which plants are eco-friendly, how much water they require, and whether they need shade or sun? Farmers markets are another great source for plants. There are vendors that sell their plants and flowers and they are usually filled with great information regarding their products. You can also check with a local landscaper for advice.

Try keeping a portion of your yard for natural plantings. Native wild flowers or plants that attract butterflies or birds are beautiful and will attract helpful insects into your yard as well. Not only are they great for your yard but a nice way to spend a couple of minutes watching graceful butterflies enjoy your garden.

When purchasing lighting for your yard most people think solar when they think green. Solar lighting is great, but be cautious which ones you choose. Many are made with toxic plastic resins and made for the short term instead of the long haul. Within a couple of years these lights will have to be replaced and because of what they're made of, they are not recyclable. Definitely not eco-friendly! The good news is that if you search you can find solar lights plus many more items for your yard that are much more eco-friendly products. The products available are growing at an amazing rate. Check out websites like Amazon or Green Electronics for more eco-friendly products and ideas to fit your landscaping and gardening needs.

If you're looking for a fountain or birdbath to add to your yard or patio, there are eco-friendly options available as well. They now make fountains and birdbaths with built in solar panels so that they are self sustaining. They'll add beauty and attract colorful birds for your viewing pleasure.

If you live somewhere with a pool or beach access, you may want to consider installing a solar outdoor shower. You can get ones that are free standing, large enough for children and adults and only need to be hooked up to your garden hose. No heating costs because its solar and it uses minimal water. In addition to saving money you will also be saving your house from excess dirt and sand.
