Unfortunately, not often does that happen. More than likely, contact with an online stranger will lead to nothing but dashed hopes. This is the state of reality in the relatively new phenomenon of online dating.

The concept of searching for that 'special someone' online harks back to the mid-90's, when the Internet was just emerging in terms of widespread consumer use. Among the pioneers was Match.com, which started business on April 21, 1995. The business entity is now a massive conglomerate, with about one million paying subscribers from fully 246 countries. It is estimated that more than 60,000 new people across six continents join up on the site every day, joining the 15 million people who already have accounts. The parent company now presides over 30 dating sites in 18 local languages.

While Match.com is one of the preeminent dating sites, others have experienced similar overwhelming growth in user participation and subscribership. There seems to be no lack in the number of people who are willing to put their life's details online for anyone with an Internet connection to view.

But, is this development a positive one? Does online dating represent a quantum leap forward in male-female interaction? Many experienced users of such sites have good reasons to respond in the negative, positing that the cons far outweigh the pros.

It is the endemic lying that forms the basis of most complaints. You simply can't believe what you see and read in a person's dating profile because it is far too easy for a person to lie about himself or herself.

Misrepresenting oneself to gain an advantage, especially when seeking a mate, significantly predates the Internet by a long while. On dating sites, it has been definitively demonstrated that by falsely placing a picture of a better-looking person in a profile, and/or by dramatically overstating their income, an online dater can significantly increase the number of daily responses that he or she receives.

So, the farce continues and online dating sites march on. Despite huge problems as a communication medium, lots of people around the globe are signing up each and every day. It seems that as long as the Internet exists, people seeking to find love will frequent it, hoping to find that magic hookup.

Although it would be a bit scary for people who are logging into the system for the first time, online dating sites could be a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

How does an online dating site work?

There are basic rules and tricks that you must learn if you want to be able post successfully and get good replies from other people using the online dating site. First, the systems works by giving you a certain space where you can post your pictures and describe yourself.

You should use this space wisely. Be creative in your presentation. Remember that your space represents you. If you want to feel attractive, then you must make this space very attractive.

Just make sure that you design your page in such a way that it will appeal to the group of people that you want to meet online. For instance, if you want to date people who are into sports, organize to make it appealing to outdoors people or if you want to appeal to the all corporate profile, you can just go for the ?sexy power dressing? thing and let those guys drool over your looks.

It would also be a good idea to write something light and funny about yourself instead of the all ?so serious me?. Do not write too long descriptions about yourself.

You don't want people on the dating site to think that you are trying to write your autobiography or something. Now for the pictures, make sure that you upload only the best pictures available.

You want to look good online remember? So dig up all those gorgeous pictures you have and post them. You might also want to spike your pictures a bit with some extra colors and graphics, just make sure that you don't overdo your designs that it will steal the readers attention from your image.

The most exciting part is when people start replying to your ad. Remember that people are looking for somebody who is funny, smart and easy to get along with.

Your witty and warm replies to the emails you receive will determine as to whether or not you will find friends and dates online. Try to write letters that are custom-made and not just some copy and paste work.

Remember that this person may also receive letters from other people online so make your letters an interesting as possible and once you have exchanged letters for sometime and like what you are getting, do not take too long before you take the relationship to another stage.

Going out on a real date is much more fun than simply exchanging letters and pictures!
