Already, the report says, more than 12,000 Mexican troops have participated in operations in over a dozen Mexican states, huge amounts of drugs have been seized, and a lot of high-profile traffickers and smugglers have been busted.
John Walters, Director of ONDCP and President Bush's Drug Czar, stated in the report that securing our borders is a top priority for the government. "For too long," he said, "drug-related violence, addiction, crime, and corruption have taken a toll on citizens living on both sides of the Southwest border."
Every time we hear a government official lamenting the extent of addiction – and let's not forget there are millions of addicted Americans who need drug rehab – we can't help wondering what the response would be from critics of the U.S. drug policy, and from the public too, if the White House were to ask Congress for $1 billion to train drug treatment professionals and build modern drug rehab centers across the country. A government that embarked on a truly spectacular national program expanding drug rehab centers wherever they're needed would very likely reap good news at the polls. How could saving American lives at home in hundreds or even thousands of new drug rehab centers not be at least as popular as pouring billions of dollars into Central and South America?
We can certainly applaud a more secure border and less cocaine on the streets. But there is an epidemic of addiction in America, millions of alcohol and narcotic addicts who are not being reached and adequately treated. Less cocaine on the streets, unfortunately, usually means a simple switch to another drug, or more crime to support the even higher prices that short supply brings.
What would help strike a positive – and very popular – blow for the war on drugs is more money – a lot more money – for the services, trained personnel and physical facilities needed to reach out and recover the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunts, cousins and children – that’s who America's addicts are – and get each one of them through a successful drug rehab program.
