If you hope to successfully overcome alcoholism or drug addiction - getting proper treatment and professional help is the best way to do that. But first you need to understand (and I say this often) - that any drug rehab program or alcoholism treatment center you attend - is only the beginning of the journey. Going to rehab/treatment is only for a few weeks or couple of months at most generally - and so there is obviously only so much you can do during that period. Its primary purpose is to get you through the first few (and generally hardest) weeks and provide you with the tools you need to maintain your sobriety. But - and this is a big BUT - you ultimate success is purely dependent on you and the effort you put into maintaining your recovery. I read a good analogy on another website - choosing a drug and alcohol rehab program is a bit like choosing a gym. Sure you get better one's than others - but ultimately your success is determined by the energy and determination you put into it. Ultimately though - I believe any form of treatment program is only as good as the preparation it provides you with for when you leave. And that's why I believe a 12-step based program makes the ideal treatment because it provides you with a proven path to follow after rehab. Relapse rates for addicts and alcoholics are high not because rehab doesn't work - but because they don't do what is necessary in terms of putting the work in after leaving treatment to stay clean. And no matter how good the treatment center - it's what you do once you leave that ultimately counts. So the ultimate determinant in deciding on any form of alcohol/addiction treatment program should be what path or program they suggest (or provide for you) when you leave their doors. At least if you decide on going the 12-step based treatment program route - you know you'll have a clear and proven path to follow. And so how successful you are boils down to one person - and that is YOU. So remember when making your decision on choosing any form of drug and alcohol rehab program - to think big picture and long-term. Not just the immediate benefits it provides.
For people afflicted with the alcohol addiction problem, the popular saying ?what you don't know can't hurt you? is not applicable. On the contrary, when the subject is alcohol, what you don't know can harm you, and if you have already sunk in too deep at the abyss of alcoholism, there is still hope for you. Finding an alcohol rehab center and joining alcohol rehab program can be your next best solution before everything is too late.
Of course, chances are, you never planned to be an alcoholic in the first place. A sip here and there every now and then was all you did. Besides, there were always ?valid? excuses that trigger your urge to drink, like arguments with your parents or your spouse, pressured work atmosphere, irritation with your boss, a need for relaxation and the list goes on. Before you know it, you had sunk neck-deep into one of the most successful destroyers of lives in the world, and only an alcohol rehab program can lift you out.
Admitting to yourself that you have become an alcoholic is not a picnic, but no matter how hard you try to deny, if you are already there there's no nice word for it. However, if you can admit that you need help and going to an alcohol rehab center is one of your options, then you are on the right track. The question is how do you know when you need to submit yourself to an alcohol rehab program? The best way of finding out is to try to cut alcohol from your system even for a day and gauge your reaction. If you feel that you cannot survive a whole day without a few sips (or bottles) of alcohol, then you are staring at a capital letter P, which means problem with alcohol.
Admit it, alcoholism is an ugly disease that has ruined the lives and future of many, and has led so many people early to their graves, and the only way to avoid ruining your life is to submit yourself to an alcohol rehab center for proper treatment. Alcoholism is not a piece of dirt that can be removed when you wash it away with water, but alcohol rehab will never be an easy task. The good news is that there is help and hope for you. So now that you know you need to undergo an alcohol rehab program, the next step is to find a rehab center which offers the specific treatment program that you need.
Seeking the help and advice of a doctor or a health care provider could offer you worlds of good because these individuals are trained to help you identify your problems, and how to match specific programs that would meet your particular needs. However, submitting yourself to an alcohol rehab center is not enough. You are the key player in the whole process and the determination to leave alcohol behind and live a new life is with you and you alone.
