[D711]Dry Dog Food Ingredients
by Lee Dobbins -, Lee
Dry dog food has been recommended as the best diet for dogs, however this is quite untrue. While dry dog food can be included in your dog's diet in a limited way, most products are very high in simple carbohydrates, relatively low in protein and of inferior nutritional quality. Furthermore, it is very bad for dogs to eat food that doesn't contain natural moisture.

The heavy use of commercially prepared dry dog food by dog owners is a leading cause of rising incidence of canine diabetes and associated pancreatitis. Doing a search on "dry dog food" on the internet will lead to a lot of websites and articles encouraging the use of this product, yet the purpose behind these articles is to sell dry dog food. So how reliable is this information really? The only safe and healthy dry dog food is likely to also be organic and contain high levels of protein and include complex carbohydrates in the form of whole grains. It will also contain dried vegetables and be very low in sodium and not have chemical additives. Even so, organic dry dog food should still be used sparingly. It should not be all that you feed your dog.

To maintain good health, dogs need a largely natural diet. The best diet is a raw diet that also incorporates healthy scraps from the family and raw dog bones. If this isn't possible, feeding your dog commercially prepared organic food from a reputable company can provide most of your dog's nutritional needs. Organic dry dog food can be added to this diet or given your dog as a treat, but should not be the only thing you feed your dog.

We have become a very convenience oriented society. We are busy and often stressed by the demands of earning a living and raising children. It is so much easier to pour food out of a box or open a can (and even then we'd rather have ring-pull cans) and we can fall into the trap of living on autopilot and feeding our animals and our families food that is of poor nutritional value and that can actually be a health hazard. Let's switch back to manual control and pay attention to what we are doing. Our family - both four legged and two legged members - will look and feel better and even if they don't thank us, we'll know who they have to thank.

The recent mass recall of pet food gave many pet owners quite a scare. One suggestion arising from of this issue was to search the Internet for information on dog foods for the purpose of reviewing the ingredients in the various brands to get a better idea as to which brand might be best for your pet.

There is a limit as to what information a pet food manufacturer must put on the label as the industry is basically self-regulating. Some manufacturers will offer more information than others. A online review of the ingredients of several brands can be a good first step in finding the best possible product for your pet.

Inferior pet foods often contain ingredients that are difficult for your dog to digest. These ingredients include certain chicken by-products, gluten, sugar, wheat and corn. Just because your pet seems to be going after its meals with enthusiasm doesn't mean that the meal is necessarily healthy. In your search for a quality product you can immediately eliminate those products containing a significant amount of the aforementioned ingredients.

Some companies field test their products, especially the premium grades of their product line. If nothing more, the fact that a product has been tested may be taken as a good sign. Still, many companies offer dog food products in different grades so it's best to read the labels before purchasing. You'll want to find how closely the lower grades resemble the company's premium grade.

We've mentioned several ingredients to be avoided. So which ingredients are considered beneficial? Turkey, fish, chicken and lamb meal are all considered to be beneficial as are rice, potatoes and vegetables. The presence of vitamins, particularly Vitamin E, and the Omega fatty acids promote a healthy skin and coat for your pet.

A Dog Food Analysis-Reviews of kibble also allows consumers to see reviews from actual dog owners. These owners rate their experience with a dog food. Many times, these analysis sites have their own experts who will aid in the comments left by consumers. Use their knowledge to help in your decision making about the best choice of food for your dog.

Many people today are turning to organic food. The dog food industry is also picking up on the organic craze and offering organic dog food. Look around your stores the next time you are out shopping and you will see the word "natural" attached to many of the bags of dog food. My suggestion would be to again, read the label.

After the pet food recall, I began making my dog her food from scratch. The dog food recipe I use includes ingredients like strained beef, beef broth, vegetable oil, milk, eggs, unflavored gelatin, cornmeal, and flour. If this is the route you choose, make sure that you know that it is not cheap to make your own dog food and it takes a lot of time. But to me, my best friend is worth it!
