[D689]Drinking Water System Filters
by Bob Goodhand, Bob

If you are health conscious like me you know that drinking more water is good for you. The problem is, without using the right drinking water filters, you will be drinking more germs, radon, heavy metals (think lead), weed and insect killers, and chemicals like benzene and chlorine.

Not only can these contaminants be in your cold, clear tap water, they can also be in your coffee, in your tomato soup, and in your jello. By not using a proper drinking water filter system you and your family could be at risk from these unseen hazards.

The risks are there, but are the threats to your health serious enough to take action'  Here are 5 things to consider:

1. Health Problems - Depending on the source of the contaminants and levels present, a host of health problems have been attributed to poor quality drinking water.  Among them: cancer, circulatory problems, nervous system problems, blood problems, organ damage, reproductive problems, and bone disease.  Infants, children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are especially at risk.

2. Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) - Your municipal water service may be doing a good job of removing most of these contaminants.  But how good a job'  You can check it out by looking up the annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) that the EPA requires for your area.  The CCR is your local water quality report on over 80 EPA drinking water health standards.  However, the CCR does not offer information about the water coming out of YOUR tap.

3. Ground Water Quality - If you get your water from a common or household well that is not treated, you should investigate the quality of your ground water by checking with your health department or local water system.  Ground water quality is impacted by runoffs from landfills, discharges of waste chemicals, emissions of natural deposits, septic tank leaching, and the use of herbicides and pesticides.

4. Test Tap Water - Whether from a community supply or local well, you should have your tap water tested regularly by a certified lab.  And while the water coming into your home may test OK, the household plumbing may have corroded, which could introduce lead pollutants at the tap.

5. Bottled Water - If you are not satisfied with your household drinking water quality, you can always buy bottled water, right? It's convenient, but bottled water may not offer the benefits you are looking for.  In their Bottled Water Basics publication the EPA says, "Know what you are buying. Bottled water is much more expensive, per gallon, than tap water. Because of this, consider whether you are buying it as a healthy alternative to bottled beverages, for its taste, or for other reasons."

Do yourself a favor and investigate the benefits of drinking water filters. Spend some time comparing the many drinking water filter options.  After you do, you'll discover like I did that there are many mediocre water filtration products out there, and only very few truly get the job done.

Directly comparing the costs of drinking water filters can be bewildering. Although a more expensive drinking water filter usually outperforms the cheaper version, there will be some surprising exceptions. We looked at 10 of the top rated drinking water filters and found they ranged from $34.95 to $420.00 -- simply amazing price range! What factors go into making one water filter so much more expensive than another?

Mark up can be a concern. You may know that resellers buy a product from a factory and then "mark up" the price in order to make a profit. Companies that do not manufacture anything are called resellers. They simply go around the world looking for products that they can buy for a relatively low price and sell for more. In fact, drinking water filters are no different from any other product.

So, if you can buy a drinking water filter (or any other product for that matter) directly from the factory, you will save money. At times you save the cost equivalent of buying two, or even three, of them. The mark up by the reseller of the product is crucial. If you look into it, you'll discover the majority of potable water filter makers pricing are comparable to each other. The average price is around $140.00 for a counter top system.
But what about those really low priced models? Brita and Pur are the most highly advertised and also the most frequently heard. Let's examine them and see if they are truly worth it.

A Brita drinking water filter for the faucet retails for about $34. Although it removes chlorine, it does not remove other by-products like THMs. It makes no sense to me to block only one of them. Chlorine and THMs have both been linked to cancer. In breast cancer patients, the measure of THMs in the fat cells is elevated as compared to that of healthy women. Significant numbers of new rectal cancer cases -- possibly into the hundreds per day -- can be attributed to chlorine, say experts.

There are some other impurities that a Brita drinking water filter cannot block.
These include VOCs (chemicals found paint thinners, dry cleaning solvents and gasoline) and MTBE, a gasoline additive. All of these substances have been found in public reservoirs and cannot be removed by treatment facilities. The concentration limits established by federal regulation as "safe" are regarded by some in the scientific community as far too high, given that even low exposure, when continued over years, can increase the incidence of heart disease and cancer.

PUR drinking water filters remove even less impurities than Brita. Often, consumers seek out PUR drinking water filters because the flavor and hue of their home water supply doesn't meet their standards. Many people are not aware that the PUR filters they buy do not filter many dangerous chemical contaminants. What they fail to understand is that while chlorine can be removed easily, THMs are much more stubborn. Herbicides and pesticides that the United States use regularly are not blocked by these filters. Anything that is used in the environment eventually ends up in the reservoir and finally makes it in to your home. A proper water filter eliminates every one of these chemicals.

The best drinking water filters are reasonably priced and block everything that we can throw at them. Spend some time looking for one and do all the research.
