[T1051]To Stay In Bed
by Patti Rob, Pat
Even as more hotels continue to crop up in various locations, you still have that segment of individuals that are very interested in spending their time in a bed & breakfast instead. They may be tired of the whole hotel scene and what it has to offer them. Most bed & breakfast locations are simple but also very personal when it comes to the services they provide. Even though some of them have plenty of rooms to offer, they still make their guests the number one priority.

Hotels are often crowded in the lobby and you don't get personal attention. You basically check into your room and you are left to fend for yourself. A bed & breakfast can offer you a great view as well as the chance for a couple to have a romantic getaway. Most bed & breakfast locations are less expensive than staying at a hotel too.

The food that you will be served at a bed & breakfast is usually worth the stay all by itself. Waking up to the smell of fresh coffee brewing or other familiar smells may remind you of home. However, you can simply come to the table and enjoy the meal. You won't have to make it or clean up afterwards.

Traveling can really make a person long for the simple pleasures of home. With a bed & breakfast, you can readily access some of those things you have often taken for granted while you are home. You should be able to relax and feel very comfortable at a bed & breakfast location just like you would at home.

For those that have been curious about what bed & breakfast locations have to offer, the best thing to do is make a reservation to stay in one. Once someone does though they may decide that is the only way to travel. Since there are generally bed & breakfast locations to be found all over, a person can easily get away from having to deal with hotel rooms.

For your guests, you may not have the room in your home to accommodate them. It can feel very impersonal to put them up at a hotel. You may feel more comfortable knowing they are at a lovely bed & breakfast not too far from you. This is a great way to treat them to something special while they in town to spend some time with you.

The little things are what really make the difference with the top rated bed & breakfast locations. Hotels often miss these details and as a result guests don't feel valued while they are staying there. Almost everyone that has the option to stay at a bed & breakfast over a hotel will do so as long as they have had good experiences with this type of establishment in the past.

It is your job as a business owner to make sure your bed & breakfast offers an amazing experience for each and every guest that comes in. You want them to remember it as a special time and definitely want them to come back. You can be sure if they had a better time in your bed & breakfast than in a hotel, they will let other people know about it as well.

It is often difficult to get your child to go to bed for two reasons. One, the child is in no mood to give up the activity and go to the quiet lonely bedroom and be deprived of the fun. Secondly, by the end of the day you are so tired that you long for some quiet moments all to yourself. Both of you are justified and that is where the clash of interest begins. The result is your child throws up a tantrum or comes up with some demand or the other that can postpone bedtime.

But it seems that over a third of children refuse to go to bed before their parents!

If you are one of the parents of such children for whom getting your child to go to bed is an arduous task, here are some tips that can help:

First, you need to establish how much sleep they actually need. Most children under 12 need about 10 to 12 hours sleep (the younger they are, the more they need). However, some kids just seem to need very little. If that is the case with yours, ie, they genuinely function well on, say, 6 or 8 hours sleep, there is just no point fighting with them to go to bed 4 hours before they need to - all that will happen is they get up four hours earlier and wake you up then, instead!

After you have established a reasonable bedtime, you should stick to it. Kids take advantage of any weakness. They will not miss a chance to manipulate you into giving them an extra hour. They have a fertile imagination and will concoct any and every tactic to wrangle that from you. They will ask for a drink or a question, or they will say they are scared or need to pee, anything! Some of them are so good at it that they might make you feel sorry for them so that you allow them to stay up later or sleep in your bed. Don't give in.

If you have set the rules clearly, make sure you adhere to them. Establish a bedtime routine. It's more important for the younger ones. You will need to start much before the target bedtime and lead them through changing clothes, doing teeth and bathroom, reading a story and so on. It pays to give them your full attention during this routine.

Finally, put the lights out, whether they are asleep or not. Be firm and calm. Make it clear that you expect them to stay in bed. Some children can't sleep in the dark room; so leave the door open or a night-light for them. If your child likes music, you could put on some gentle, soothing music too.

All this is fine, but if the child gets out of bed, or calls for your attention, then you need to judge the situation calmly. If the need is genuine, cater to it without giving them too much attention so that it doesn't become a routine affair.

Children are inventive; they will invent excuses, problems. One way to tackle this is to set a timer and tell them that you will check on them in ten minutes, if they stay in bed. The trick is to begin with a small time and then gradually increase it. Make sure you live by your promise, but don't overstay. Just come and tuck them in, caress them and leave.

If the child takes very long to sleep you may have to repeat this routine twice or thrice till he falls asleep. You can go on increasing the intervals till he is asleep. In the beginning it will involve a lot of work, but if you do this consistently then they will learn to stay in bed and it will become part of the daily routine.

Make sure you keep it all positive by praising them for staying quietly in bed. And make sure that you fulfill your promise by actually coming and checking on them when you said you would - a good reason to use a timer to remind you!

If your child gets up before your next check, you can do the following:

Send him firmly back to bed. No need to shout or get angry, just let it be known that you mean business. Tell him you will come up again but after ten minutes, which will be counted from the beginning. Make your point clear and then ignore him until the time for your next check.

Remember to reward your child for staying nicely in bed. Make a star chart or something similar to encourage him.
