[T906]Ticket To Work At Home
by Scott Phelps, Sco

Many work at home positions are incredibly flexible with their requirements and will accommodate people who have little or no experience for the job that they wish to work, as long as they are willing to put in the effort and are able to learn. Some though will require educational qualifications or significant amounts of training for you to even be considered for the job that you are applying for. If you don't have the required qualifications, is it worth attempting to complete the training to get them?

Medical transcription is the first job that springs to mind. Training and certification in the field is required, as well as specialized equipment for your home office. The cost of the training courses vary, but at the end of them you are qualified for a job that can bring in full time wages, sometimes with benefits included, from the comfort of your own home.

Whether or not you feel that it is worth the cost of training depends on many factors. Firstly, can you afford the cost of the training? Some courses are cheaper than others, but they tend to include fewer materials for the course and may be from unknown institutions, and thus may not be the best of the courses to complete.

Next, do you have the time to dedicate to the training? For medical transcription you may spend a full year training, during which time you will have to take classes, study, and be tested-potentially needing child care through all of this so that you can concentrate, and increasing your costs a great deal.

The other important factor to consider is how long do you intend to work in this at home position? If you think that working from home will only be a stop gap, you may not wish to put out a lot of money on training. Consider how long it would take you to break even on an average starting wage, before you are even beginning to make a profit. Knowing how long you would have to work to pay for the training that you took may tell you that the training is not for you.

Similar issues arise if you wish to work in web design, computer repair, or Search Engine Optimization, or a large number of other potential at home jobs. Courses exist that will help you to master the skills, but if you do not intend to make a long term career out of it they may not be worth the out lay.

If you do choose to enroll in a course of training, then you should make sure that you get the best value for your money. Train only with accredited institutions, for nationally recognized qualifications. Begin your training only when you are confident that you have the time to dedicate to your studies to increase the chances of you passing, and try and find only the most relevant courses for the work that you want to do.

Training such as this can increase your earnings potential, but only if you seek out relevant training, and only if you put your full effort into it.

That is the question. The face of the workplace has changed over the years to the point where there are now a majority of people working from the comfort of their own homes versus having to drive anywhere from five to fifty minutes to work. Not only is it saving people gasoline (which is continually on the rise), but it is also saving them the headache of having to deal with over anxious supervisors micromanaging as well as nosy co-workers. In most cases, employees are able to set their own schedule that is typically based (somewhat loosely) around a 9am-5pm workday. In other cases, managers and/or supervisors simply require that their employees make themselves available during regular work hours just in case they are needed for any reason.

Working from home has many benefits-especially for a rising class of stay-at-home moms who can now enjoy quality time with their children without having to feel guilty for leaving them with a baby sitter while they go off to work for nine plus hours. Rather, now moms get to stay at home with their children and spend quality time with them while they work at the same time. Imagine all of the moms who are saving money that they would have otherwise been spending on daycare and/or babysitters!

Another benefit of working from home is the fact that on some small scale, it saves you money on having to purchase clothes for work- although most work environments nowadays are dress casual. Not everything is sunny and bright though. There are some downsides to working at home believe it or not. For instance, many people may complain about over zealous bosses or nosy co-workers, but the fact of the matter is that when you actually have to go to work, you are getting a chance to interact with other people on a regular basis. Work friendships are often how people end up with their significant others. It is also a great way to network with other people and meet new friends. There are coroporate parties and other events to attend, and sometimes (depending on where you work), you may even have athletic teams that are sponsored by your company. When you work from home, you don't have any of that. This isn't to say that you cannot have a fulfilling social life when you work out of your house; it's just to say that you may have to work a little harder than others who are at an actual office.

Working from home has also forced many employers to change the way they think when they put out ads to hire people for their company. For instance, I noticed that in many of the ads for companies that are hiring, the company will actually offer possible employees the chance to work from home occasionally. Sometimes companies will offer other incentives such as working all or most of your hours within certain days so that you can have one day off per week. One of my friends has a setup like this. He is an engineer and works slightly longer days Monday through Friday so that he can have every other Monday off. It's a pretty nice incentive, and it just goes to show that employers (whether they like it or not) may have no choice as the number of people who work from home continues to increase.
