by Juliet Cohen, Jul

Baby acne is a problem of skin and defined as inflamed blackheads, red pimples and whiteheads. It can be present at birth, but typically appears at 3 to 4 weeks of age. Baby acne commonly appears on the arms, legs, shoulders, face and buttocks. Baby acne usually appears on the chin, cheeks or forehead in the form of whiteheads, blackheads or pustules. The bumps of baby acne are quickly fleeting evidence of the connection between a mother's body and her baby's. During the final moments of pregnancy, her hormones cross the placenta into her child. Among other things (such as maturing the lungs), this stimulates the oil glands on the skin, eventually giving rise to the baby acne. Sometimes, baby acne is associated by contact with dirty clothes.

Milia are pearly white bumps on a baby's nose, chin or cheeks. Sometimes milia affect a baby's gums or roof of the mouth as well. Many babies are born with milia. Baby acne often develops within the first three to four weeks after birth. Many babies have both conditions at once. Benzoyl Peroxide 5% lotion is very effective to remove acne from the skin. This lotion may be used in babies over 3 months old. Wash your baby's face with warm water two or three times a day and pat it dry. Don't use lotions, oils or other treatments. Never pinch or scrub milia or baby acne. Oils or creams are not recommended by the health care providers to reduce the acne from the surface of the skin. Clean affected portion of the skin with mild soap and clean water or cleanser like Aquanil Cleansing Lotion daily.

The birth of a new child, a baby, is one of the most precious gifts that a woman or family can experience. Mothers spend hours doting over their new born child observing every physical and behavioral characteristic. It is not unusual for mothers to notice that at around 4 weeks of age, their baby breaks out in little red pimples. This usually comes as a complete surprise to the mother. This condition is known as Baby Acne. At times it can be confusing because the pimples can appear strongly at times and then seem to disappear at other times.

Baby Acne can be seen in newborns usually between the ages of 4 weeks of age and six months of age. Not all babies get it but a large number do. Baby acne usually appears on the baby's cheeks and on other areas of the face. Doctors say that baby acne happens as a direct result of the mother's hormone levels when she is giving birth. During childbirth and for a short period of time before, the mother's hormones are allowed to pass through the placenta to the baby.

Symptoms of Baby Acne

Baby acne will be at its peak when the baby's skin is irritated, or when the baby is hot or fussy.

If the baby's skin becomes wet from spit-up, saliva or milk, the condition may appear worse for several days.

Fleshy or red pimples occur predominately on the cheeks, but are also quite common on the forehead and chin. Whiteheads are sometimes present.
