It is believed that teak was introduced to Java from India between 400 and 600 years ago, but it can be dated back to as early as 7th Century Thailand, where it was used to construct and decorate royal residences, religious buildings, and trade ships. Other cultures began using teak wood for shipbuilding in the Middle Ages, and its buoyancy, water resistance, durability and anti-fungal properties make it an ideal material for marine construction to this day.

In the late 1800s, teak began to be used seriously for outdoor furniture. Strongly admired in its native India, teak soon travelled to Victorian England, where teak benches and chairs became the perfect compliment to an English garden. Popular in the 1950s and 1960s in a style often known as Danish modern, teak furniture had a second boom in popularity and now teak is one of the most sought-after types of vintage furniture. Today teak is used primarily for carving, residential and commercial flooring, and the construction of homes and furniture.

Contrary to popular belief, teak is a deciduous tree which grows in the dry, hilly forests of South East Asia. It grows quickly initially, but will take about 50 years to reach full maturity. This steady growth has clearly made it difficult for countries to keep up with demand.

The world's first teak plantation was raised at Nilambur during the 1840s, paving the way to ensure a steady supply of teak timber in the face of dwindling resources in the natural forests. Since then, teak plantations have spread steadily not only in its native range, but also in other tropical regions across the world. These plantations are government-regulated to ensure that the correct number and size of trees are being felled, and to ensure responsible re-planting of trees.

Music is always changing and moving through cycles of the latest trends, just like fashion is always evolving and moving back through the same cycles with modern twists. You can tell a lot about a certain decade by listening to the popular music of the day. There are noticeable differences between 80s pop music, 90s pop music and 00s pop music that say more about each of the three most recent decades than any words could describe.

There are many aspects of music that seem to change as the decades pass. It is not always so easy to see when you are listening to the popular music of the day, but after looking back it is easier to see all the nuances of the overriding trends in music. When looking at 80s pop music, for example, you can see the influence of emerging computer technology with the extensive use of synthesizers. And while 90s pop music may not seem all that far away, it is now easy to see the trends of the decade. While the first half of the nineties was filled with the rage of grunge music, the latter half saw a backlash with the return of sugary sweet pop music, including boy bands and several teenage girl singers.

It may not be as easy to see the trends in 00s pop music since we are still living in this decade, but once more years have passed it will be easier to see what this decade will leave behind in the musical history books. The Internet age has definitely had an influence on the music industry since the dawn of the new millennium, but it is hard to say whether this has really had an impact on the style and quality of music being produced. There has definitely been some great music released between the year 2000 and now though.

When it comes to music there is no telling what the future holds. Looking to music of the past, however, can tell a lot about previous decades.
