[T718]The San Francisco Chronicle
by John Bisnar, Joh
San Francisco is known around the world for its incredible beauty and the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge. A lesser known topic of conversation is the city's cutting edge Bicycle Plan that is intended to make San Francisco a bike-friendly region by creating an environment that limits bike accidents.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, a nonprofit public benefit corporation with over 7500 members paying dues, has been working with the city since 1970 to make San Francisco healthier and more livable by improving the road conditions for cycling. The city has responded in a positive manner, approving a major proposal in 2005 to add bike lanes, bike paths, and connect traffic-calmed streets throughout San Francisco for improved bike travel.

While bike accidents continue to be a problem throughout many cities in California, the San Francisco Bicycle Plan has four main goals that will encourage biking and make it a safer option than it has been in the past:

1.Improve Facilities for Bicyclists: Not only is San Francisco looking to provide cyclists with transportation routes that avoid the major traffic areas, but the city is also looking to increase the number of safe parking areas for cyclists and improve maintenance to limit the amount of obstacles on the roadway.
2.Improve Bicycle SafetyL San Francisco intends to introduce bicycle training to explain the rules of the road and provide information on how to share the road in a safe manner. The city will also enforce violations more strictly to discourage bad biking habits.
3.Promote Biking in San Francisco: The San Francisco Bike Plan intends to increase bicycle use in the city and encourage potential cyclists and visitors alike to ride a bike. By promoting biking as a healthy alternative and making it easier to make the switch, it is believed that many more cyclists will be on the road in years to come.
4.Increase Bike Funding: To continue moving forward, San Francisco will always need additional funding to make biking an ever-growing alternative. The bike plan will seek out funding sources while the San Francisco government will match the donations.

San Francisco has had an alarming rate of bike accidents in the past, averaging around 300 per year in recent years. However, the San Francisco Bike Plan will make the roads safer for cyclists than ever before. While there may be more bike accidents overall due to having more cyclists on the road, the bike accidents are expected to be less serious on average with fewer injuries per thousand cyclists.

A true melting pot, San Francisco has a hybrid culture, originating from the Asian, Latino and American roots. This would probably explain the open-mindedness of San Francisco daters. It is not uncommon and it is definitely acceptable to see people from two different backgrounds or cultures dating.

Some people have said that San Francisco differs from other cities with active dating scenes by their styles. For instance, the bars in New York are more casual compared to the San Francisco bars. It is also common for singles to go to gatherings held in museums, art galleries, and other unconventional venues for meeting potential romantic partners. But one of the trends in San Francisco nowadays is the Speed Dating.

Speed Dating is also popular in other major cities, but this type of dating is more widespread in San Francisco. There are lots of singles who are working and earning enough, and who do not have time to go to dates very often. Just think of Speed Dating as a Jobs Fair—there are many companies for graduates to apply to, many options are available, and the job interview is quick so the hiring can also be quick.

The most important thing in Speed Dating is not the “dating” itself. It really is not dating yet, because you will just talk with a member of the opposite sex for only five to seven minutes. And so what really matters is the first impression, how you come off to the person you are talking to. There are also sets of questions that a man or a woman asks the first time—such as “Where do you live?”, “What are you into?”, and “What is your job?” Of course, it is important to get information and to get to know the person as much as you can in such a short time.

For most San Francisco daters, it is important to have a partner who lives in the same city, or who at least lives near the area. If someone asks you the questions, “Where are you from? Where do you live?”, you have to answer honestly. But if you do not live in San Francisco, then what are you doing, going to Speed Dating groups in San Francisco?

It is also a good idea to make sure that you will have something in common with the person you decide to date. Consider the tastes in food, for instance—do you have similar tastes? In San Francisco, Asian restaurants are found everywhere. Japanese restaurants are especially popular in the city. On your first date, make sure that you are knowledgeable in Japanese food, so if your date decides that you go to a Japanese restaurant, you would not get lost while trying to read the menu.

Most dating tips are probably just easy and common sense, but really, there are lots of things to think about. Because San Francisco has a reputation for romance, you really have to get serious considering what and whom you want to date. But do not spend too much time on thinking, just have fun!
