[T730]The Seven Crystal Balls
by Knight Pierce Hirst, Kni
When I was a child, I wanted a crystal ball. I wanted to peer into a glass sphere and tell the future. My mother, however, didn't need a crystal ball. When she asked me where the cookies went, she knew I'd say, "I don't know". When she asked me how the glass got broken, she knew I'd say, "I don't know".

Politicians say "I don't know" a lot too. Maybe they're in touch with their inner child. Of course, when they spend more time trying to raise money for their next campaign than they do serving their present term, I know they think they're an only child.

As soon as a child is sixteen - whether you're ready or not - he or she will want to drive. The predictable sequence of events is lessons, test, permit and license. The predictable outcome is that these new drivers will drive like their parents. They'll start seeing more orange lights than red lights and they'll be adding ten miles per hour to the speed limit.

A child's first car is usually a used car. No matter how nice a used car salesperson is or what a used car salesperson says or what little, old lady previously owned the car, it doesn't take a Fulbright scholar to know that when you buy a used car, you're going to feel used.

You're meant to feel like a proudly supportive fan when you wear a team's official jersey. Professional sports teams change uniforms to sell more product. Build it and they will come. Wear it and they will buy. When I see a boy wearing the shirt of his favorite player, I smile. When I see a man wearing the shirt of his favorite player, I understand. Wearing a player's shirt is one of the few ways men feel comfortable expressing their feelings - on their backs instead of on their sleeves.

Because of men and women who don't feel comfortable with their bodies, my gym is always crowded with new members on January second. There are fewer members after the Super Bowl parties and even fewer after Valentine's Day. Then I know there'll be plenty of parking until June - when bathing suit season is back.

I don't need a crystal ball to know these things. In fact, if someone gave me one, I wouldn't use it. I already know I don't want anything more to dust.

Just after the flurry and the hurry for the Christmas holidays, people are again riding the thrill of the NCAA season. They're not the only ones out there rooting and cheering for their favorite teams. The handicapping experts are again looking through their NCAA crystal balls for the March Madness picks to predict conference winners while speeding towards the last four showdowns.

Are You In?

College alumni and in-college students are again united, never mind political affiliations, to cheer their college to victory on the final showdown in March. Alice's March Hare will be stunned to see much madness going around in college hard courts and tailgate parties.

Perhaps you're not into the game, but the following drives you mad:

* Stunning cheerleaders with short costumes;

* New slam dunk heroes;

* Tailgate parties with lots of booze and grilled delights;

* Cool sports get-ups from head to toe;

* Soaring sales of NCAA goodies.

Whether you're in or out, the March Madness picks will seep into your bones, into your home, and into little sleepy downtown areas in town. There's no room for you to stay away from the NCAA fever. You can only catch the infection and have fun.

Crazy Busy Crystal Ball Season

But who's going to take this year's crown of the champions? Crystal ball gazers are now peering into the bal,l hoping to catch sight of the March champions, or just to find a load of March Madness picks. The countdown to March 18 is driving college basketball fans crazy and the crystal balls should deliver March Madness picks until the final four showdown in April 5-7. Would Memphis hold on to their staying power? Will Indiana survive the Sampson scandal? These are just a few of the questions the crystal balls have to answer - FAST.

Other critical questions revolve around the latest hard court performance. Now that Oregon has been humbled by UCLA, the fight for the championship berth and seeding is taking its toll on obviously physically drained conference champs.

The crystal ball will have to be careful because the underdogs still have a zesty fight in them. Now that Oklahoma is in, there will be fiercer battles now that the vindicated Oklahoma Sooners are up and ready to squeeze in a few more fights. Looking at the Cougars, will their center, Baines, perform another igniting performance?

For the next Saturdays' games check out the ranking. You can have a crack at crystal ball gazing. Check out the individual players, team strength and weaknesses, and track record. Handicapping experts will be over the scene with their strong forecasts, and wading through free NCAA basketball tips can be a frustrating exercise when you have no time to browse and evaluate the free tips.
