[T796]The Video Game Industry
by Sally Rutherford, Sal
Admit it, you love video games and would love nothing more to work with them for a living! This is the dream for so many youth today, and the tools are there to make this a reality!
Every day, new techniques and "Gadgets" are being created, and exciting new games are being built. There are so many opportunities for people to get involved in.
A video game, also known as a computer game, is actually a game composed of a computer-controlled virtual universe. Being a computer game where a video display is used as the primary feedback device, video games enable players to interact with each other to achieve a goal or set of goals.
Because of the popularity of online gaming, more and more people, especially teenagers are getting hooked into this online craze. With the growing demand for more interactive, bold, challenging and entertaining video games and programs, a growing demand for excellent and innovative video game jobs have emerged.
For those who became addicted in playing video games, it is only natural if they have developed an ambition to work in the video gaming industry. But, what does it take to delve into the video gaming workplace?
Whether you would want to work under a Playstation, XBox, or Nintendo platform, there are some basic things you should know. These include:
What is the video game industry and the extent of the business? Being a big fan of video games is not enough for you to decide if you really want to push through a career in video gaming. You need to know and be updated on the latest news about the field.
It is actually a multi-billion dollar industry that was able to outsmart and outgrow many other industries in just a short span of time. This means that being in the industry, as a video game worker can be a lucrative career because it opens a lot of opportunities.
Since it is a big industry, it is also a competitive environment, so it is a must that you familiarize yourself with the latest trends and updates. Employers will expect you to produce more innovative and brilliant work that would appeal to the younger generations. This industry can be complicated and you must be prepared to meet the challenging demands of times.
You also need a high stress tolerance level. Deadlines can be frustrating especially when it’s near. So if you are faint-hearted and can be stressed out easily then you better prepare yourself for the worst environment you can be in. All in all, you will get rewarded if you are willing to put in the effort and tenacity the video gaming industry demands.

Currently video game manufacturers and publishers usually sign what is called an exclusive agreement. What this means is the video game hardward manufacturer, such as XBox, PS3, WII, etc. has the sole rights for that publisher`s particular game.

However this trend of exclusive deals may be coming to an end. In the November issue if Electronic Gaming Monthly, Evan Van Zelfden says, "that the agreements between game publishers and hardware makers called as third-party exclusives may be ceased in the future." Van Zelfden explains further, "that more publishers and developers were willing to create computer games that can be used for different gaming platforms such as Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation, and Xbox 360 than giving an exclusive license to only one platform."

Not having an exclusive license allows publishers to develop a video game for multiple platforms. Van Zelfden agrees, "their games would have a wider market if it will be available in multiplatform versions."

It may be a while before the entire industry jumps on this "bandwagon" however there are a couple of games on the way. The games that would soon launch in multiplatform versions include "Devil May Cry 4" and "Grand Theft Auto IV".

Keep an eye out on this trend and the games that will be hitting the market soon. Soon you will no longer have to buy just the XBox to get a certain game and so on.
