?John,? he said rather intensely, ?don't talk about trying.? ?Try? is one of the most negative words in your language. Whenever someone says that he is trying, it means that there isn't a real commitment. If you speak or think ?try? the subconscious knows you're not serious. Don't ?try,? just ?do? or don't ?do.? ?
?Thanks,Gideon,? I said, somewhat apologetic for forgetting the things I knew.
?You're welcome, John,? was his response. ?Look at Theo here. He's been having a tough time and, yet,he keeps working against tremendous odds. Still, I know he enjoys doing what he does.?
?What do you do, Theo?? I asked.
Theo took a deep breath, looked at me and replied, ?I'm into trees, John.?
?Into trees?? I asked with a foolish expression on my face. "Into trees? Exactly how do you do that??
?Don't look so surprised,? said Theo. ?Let me explain.
Your primary source of food on Earth is from those factories that you call ?trees.? For centuries people have been systematically destroying vegetation on Earth. The situation has become critical. Your rain forests are being destroyed, your rivers have become polluted, and in some areas, you can't breathe the air. People think that it's someone else's problem, but let me assure you, it is everybody's duty to do something about it. If the condition is not reversed soon, your children and your children's children will suffer. My assignment is to help stop the environmental destruction of your planet. There are a number of us working on this. Sometimes it seems hopeless, but we'll continue our work. We're seeing some signs of change, few though they be.?
?What can I do to help??
?Quite a lot, actually,? he said. ?You and your children can plant some trees in your yard, and take better care of the ones you already have.If everyone did that, you would see remarkable changes. There are many groups who are trying to save the environment.Support some of them. Carefully choose the products you use in your home. Paper comes from trees. Support companies that use recycled paper. Bring your old newspapers to a recycling unit. It may take a few more minutes of your time, but it will help considerably. Each person can do small things to help. And a lot of small things add up to big results.?

As I contemplated these ideas, I realized how helpful and practical Gideon had been. He was trying to show me the way to a more glorious life. His method of teaching was simplicity itself. His was a lifetime of love and understanding, and because I felt his concern,I responded by learning many lessons extremely quickly. He used examples from everyday life and imparted to me not only knowledge, but understanding at the same time.
I remember driving along on a super highway once, accompanied by Gideon. It was a beautiful day and all seemed peaceful. I was, as usual, questioning Gideon about my concerns. ?What is the meaning of life, Gideon?? I asked, more to aggravate him than anything else.
?Life has no meaning, John.?
?No meaning, Gideon?? I was shocked.
?Life has no meaning. You have meaning. You bring meaning to life,? he calmly replied.
At about that moment there was the terrifying sound of squealing brakes and honking horns. I reacted quickly as a green sports car cut in front of me without even so much as a signal. It continued weaving in and out, disrupting the synchronized flow of traffic that had prevailed for the last half hour or so. I was visibly shaken. ?That idiot!? I shouted. ?He could have caused an accident. Look at him speed, Gideon! He may still cause a wreck.? ?He certainly is in a hurry, John,? Gideon replied. ?How can you sit there so calmly? The jerk almost ran us off the road! We could have had a horrible accident. What do you think about that??
? ?Could haves? don't count. It doesn't matter what could have happened. Only what is really happening is important. Listen, calm down and let's keep going. No harm has been done.?
These were the times when I wanted, more than anything else, to yell at Gideon or grab him by the neck and squeeze until he abandoned his attitude of calmness. How could someone always maintain such balance? I knew he had abilities beyond the ordinary, but nevertheless, it was extremely frustrating, and at the same time strangely comforting, to see him responding instead of reacting to circumstances and events.
