[N313]No Holds Barred Meaning
by Admin, Adm

The topic of how effective traditional martial arts in today's world as a way of protecting oneself is still a very sensitive issue to a lot of martial artists. What is even more sensitive is the issue of how realistic and street effective is the newer styles that have come out since UFC/PRIDE have come into the picture. I work as a bouncer and bodyguard I know what fighting is about. I have nothing against the martial arts I love the values and discipline it has taught me. I am also a Registered Black Belt and have studied styles such as Pankration. I just know that the techniques I have learned in the dojo should stay in the dojo, that also goes with styles such as the ?modern day or reality based styles? if I want to defend myself. I also teach tactical self defense and have many students with standing and grappling skills trained under reality based systems learn the hard way that what they learn is sport no different than what is learned in a traditional dojo. If a rule or law is applied to a system than it is a sport and not street effect, there are no rules in the streets your mind should not have to sensor or think can I do this to beat this person? If there is no biting, eye gouging, kicks or groin pulls than it is to civilized and is a sport because there are those rules for the opponents safety so no one gets seriously hurt or killed. Does that sound like a street fight?

How you train is how you will react in a high adrenaline stressed level. There is no time to switch gears from sport to tactical if you are training and your coach or sensei says can't hit there or no contact to the face or eyes your mind will remember that and store it for future reference. Training should be based not only on physical techniques but your environment as well.

Can you kick your attacker in the small space your in? Can you balance yourself while performing a technique on the icy sidewalk? If you grapple with him what if he has friends coming around, what do you do then? Street fighting or tactical self-defense should be in a simplest form of fighting, you don't have time to play a chess game, like you would see in a UFC match. Time is not on your side in a street confrontation nor are rules or morals. Bring kicked with a boot has a total different effect than being kicked by a bare foot, it will give you time to follow through or get away.

What we can learn from the UFC or mixed martial arts events when it comes to reality fighting is if it has rules of what not to do in the ring do it in the streets it's got to hurt.

We all get nervous at some point in our lives, but when it begins to take over our lives and affect daily activities, sleep and our overall health, it is time to take some action. Some anxiety is a normal part of life. In small quantities, stress is good -- it can motivate you and help you be more productive. However, too much stress, or a strong response to stress, is harmful.

When we do feel anxious, however, there is no need to head out to the most expensive spa in town, or take pill after pill to calm those nerves. The main thing from the time you wake up is to focus on the positives in your life, and not harp on every single thing that needs to get done. The more you focus on the big picture, it will feel overwhelming, and you will be so caught up in your anxiety that you will not get anything done at all. While it does take a great deal of effort to rid your life completely of anxiety, there are steps that you can take to ensure it does not affect your daily life.

Here are a few simple suggestions to relieve tension:

Find a Confidant
There is absolutely no point in harboring all of your anxiety within yourself. It is important to find a friend that you trust to understand where you are coming from. Sometimes all it takes is a kind ear so that we can vent from time to time what is making us tense.

Meditation
Even if it is just taking a moment out of your day to center yourself, this is better than nothing. When the walls of life continue to close in around us, a good way to break out of that is by focusing your positive energy and taking some time for self-reflection.

Make Lists
Organizing your life will help you tackle a great portion of that anxiety that sometimes overwhelms you. It will do wonders if you write down things that you need to accomplish, or even make a list of all that is bothering you. Go through the lists, and check them off as you complete them or work through them. The victories will certainly detract from the anxiety.

"Me" Time
Set aside some moments where you can just be alone and have some quiet time all to yourself. It will be good to be away from some distractions, and just enjoy your own company. But the most important thing with taking time for yourself is to be able to truly relax and put your feet up once in awhile.

Aromatherapy
You know how you feel when you inhale particular smells. They can be really bad, or really good. The good scents have the power to make you feel much better, because they signal a certain reaction or memory within the brain. This will certainly help you to feel a sense of peace and calm, and will help make your anxiety a thing of the past.

Following this advice, while it will not rid you completely from anxiety, will certainly help you work through your problems. Tackle those anxious feelings head on and work toward a more relaxed you. Home is where the heart is, and there is no need to feel anxiety within those walls. Take a breath or two, and begin sorting through all of those negative feelings. So that you can head to bed feeling calm, cool and collected, and anxiety-free.
