[N347]Normal Levels Of Cholesterol
by Adrian Fletcher, Adr
A healthy cholesterol level is important as it is known that high cholesterol levels will lead to thickening of the artery walls. This in turn can lead to high blood pressure and various other conditions that can affect the heart. Indeed, a large build up of plaque on the inner walls of the arteries is liable to cause strokes as plaque breaks off and causes clots and blockages in the bloodstream. A healthy cholesterol level is said to be anything below 200 milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood. Of course you can't find this out by having a proper blood test but once you know that this figure is higher than 200 then it is time to start doing something about it. This article will give you some ideas on ways to have a healthy cholesterol level.

It is actually remarkably easy to reduce your cholesterol level. Above all, you will need the desire and will power to change your habits and stick to the changes long after they have become unexciting. This is probably where most people fail.

The first thing you need to look at is changing the foods you eat. Phase out foods that are high in saturated fat or trans fats. These are things like fast food or ready meals. Other things that are high in these types of fats are potato chips, biscuits and cakes. Try to eat more fresh produce, like vegetables and fruit. They will lower cholesterol levels and also increase your fiber intake. Cook things differently. Use unsaturated oils like canola and olive oil if you fry your food. Otherwise try boiling, broiling or grillling food. Avoid fatty meat and dairy products. If you love milk or other types of dairy produce then lok for the lighter alternatives to these products. They are plenty around nowadays. Try eating spreads with plant sterols in them. they are proved to limit the absorption of cholesterol into the body.

Start getting regular exercise or increase the amount you are already getting. Consult your doctor before starting or increasing your exercise for a check up beforehand. Exercise can help you burn off calories and prevent weight gain. It can also strengthen the heart, and cardiovascular system and improve blood circulation. Try to get more exercise by doing things that are necessary rather than going to a gym. Try walking after lunch. Or walk to the commuter rail station rather than take the car. Take the stairs rather than the elevator in the office. Get more active, period. Think up creative ways rather than watching television. Do salsa dancing classes. Ride a bike to work.

Forget about smoking or give up if you currently smoke. If the high cost of smoking and the horrible pictures on the boxes don't put you off then you should know that it also increases cholesterol. It reduces the amount of HDL cholesterol in the body. HDL cholesterol is used to transport cholesterol to the liver where it is removed from the body. Thus by stopping smoking you will increase the amount of HDL cholesterol and reduce total cholesterol as a whole.

Don't get stressed out to much. Stress is thought to increase the levels of cholesterol in the body. chronic stress is the worst as it is long term stress that has no resolution. If you can't avoid stress at work or in other areas of your life then find a way to relieve the stress with relaxation techniques, hobbies or even exercise.

And that's it. If you can change your lifestyle to include some or all of these suggestions then you are half way to gaining a healthy cholesterol level.

Higher levels of blood cholesterol can be lowered if one reduces the intake of saturated fat such as ghee, butter, cream, egg-yolk, etc. Only 20% saturated fats are permissible in such cases. One should use polyunsaturated oils, and they must be used in the minimum quantity necessary for cooking purposes. If onion or garlic or both are added to saturated fats, blood cholesterol does not rise, because they hinder the absorption of fats from the gut. This may be the reason for the practice of frying onion and/ or garlic in 'ghee' for cooking vegetarian/non-vegetarian food.

In addition to the restriction of fats, one should take a high-fibre diet, i.e., whole wheat flour (bran to be taken along with it), whole pulses, unpolished rice and plenty of green vegetables - cooked/salad. Curd or yoghurt prepared from skimmed milk is said to be useful in lowering cholesterol. One should take only cottage cheese since it is prepared from skimmed milk.

Only low-calorie fruits are permissible, e.g. apple, orange, water-melon, musk-melon, etc.

The patient should also avoid routine dietary articles containing fats, like ice-cream, cakes, sweets, etc. Many a time the patient remains ignorant about the contents of fats in such items.

Exercise has got a very great role to play in lowering high levels of blood cholesterol. Depending on the condition of the heart etc., one should walk briskly, jog and do light exercises. It is well-established that exercise effectively lowers high levels of blood cholesterol. Drugs may be required in some cases where dietary restrictions and exercise fail to lower the level of high cholesterol. These may also be required when cholesterol levels are very high from an early stage. The patient may need either one, or a combination of two or three drugs. In some cases, a maintenance dose of the drugs may be required for some years, and in severe cases, even for the lifespan of the patient. While taking cholesterol lowering drugs, one has to stick to a very strict diet. This must be kept in mind.

From the above, therefore, one can realize that it is vital to detect high blood cholesterol at the earliest possible stage, so that its complications, especially heart attack, can be prevented and the disease can be treated by dietary restrictions and exercise alone. Drugs should be avoided as far as possible because they have their own adverse side-effects.

Persons with a higher level of HDL-cholesterol have much less chances of developing ischaemic heart disease. In females, HDL-cholesterol levels are usually high, and this may be the reason that women during the reproductive period have very little chances of developing ischaemic heart disease. The chances are greater when they enter the menopausal period.

To sum up, it may be said that if a person has more than 199 mg/dl of blood cholesterol, more than 130 mg/dl level of LDL-cholesterol, and less than 35 mg/dl of HDL-cholesterol, he requires the urgent attention of the physician for the control of the above cholesterols, so as to prevent the chances of his developing coronary artery disease, stroke, etc.
