[B62]Back To School Money
by Vincent Norman, Vin

As all parents of school-age children already know, getting everything your kids need to be fully prepared to go back to school can be rather costly. With everything from basic supplies like pencils and paper to books or all of the extracurricular activities that will soon commence, it's no wonder parents are searching for ways to save money on school uniforms for their children.

Today it's not just the private or exclusive learning institutions that require their students to wear uniforms as many schools have implemented a uniform dress code. This actually helps parents to save money on back-to-school shopping as there's no need to buy the trendiest of outfits or be pressured into buying clothes with more expensive designer labels.

However, young children do grow fast and tend to wear out their clothes faster than we do so buying school uniforms has the potential to be quite costly over the course of your children's school career making it worth your time and effort to find the best prices possible.

First, if your household income level is below a certain amount, you may actually be entitled to a grant provided by local authorities to provide families with school uniforms for their children, but of course there are varying terms and conditions that must be met.

To see if there's a grant available in your area for buying uniforms that you feel you may be eligible for, visit http://www.direct.gov.uk and search for "school uniforms" and you will have access to helpful information about school uniform policies as well as a link to apply for help with school clothing costs.

Fortunately many schools are flexible when it comes to where parents can shop for uniforms, provided they meet the basic stipulations set forth such as color or the type of collar a shirt may have. And now, supermarket chains have begun selling complete school uniforms at competitive prices for parents looking for a good bargain.

Before shopping, make sure you know exactly what is allowed in terms of trousers, shirts, short or long-sleeved shirts, and if they will also need clothing for physical education or play time. Plan on needing at least one shirt per child per day and at least two or three trousers or skirts depending on the number of times you do laundry each week.

To also save money on school uniforms you'll want to make a list of what you need as buying too much for a growing child is simply a waste of money. Shopping early to avoid possible shortages or crowds is smart, but be sure not to buy more than one size larger than you need right now for clothing or a half size for shoes.

Shopping online for school uniforms is an excellent way to save money as you'll be able to do business with merchants anywhere around the world, and be able to quickly search for the best bargains at the same time. Shopping online also gives you more options in terms of size selection and many sites offer discounts to new customers and feature discounted clothing not available in stores. But, always be sure to check the return policy and the shipping fees before making your purchase.

Time to start buying school supplies - and don't forget the clothing, bags and decisions and arguments about brand name or no name products.

Some of you have grade school children and are already familiar with the drill. But when you're new to this, it's good to go into it with some ideas for where to shop, how to do it and what to buy.

These five tips will help you save money AND your sanity!

BUY EARLY

Wait too long and you're sure to find the shelves empty at all your favorite discount stores. If your biggest concern is getting a good deal, shop early.

All of the items you need will be in the stores by August and don't forget that the dollar stores will be a good place to get all of your pens, paper and accessories.

You will find all you need at office supplies and stationary stores if you are short of time. However, be prepared to pay a bit more.

GET OUT THAT MEMBERSHIP CARD

Buying in bulk at membership stores will save you money if you have friends who are also shopping for their kids.

You may not need a box of 500 pens or 20 notebooks, but you can buy such items as a group and then split them into portions for everyone. You probably won't be able to buy everything this way, but for the essentials it's a great way to save money.

CHECK YOUR SCHOOL

Pre-packaged purchasing systems in school are a good idea as this can save money. Ask if your school has one and the cost can be shared between students and parents.

This will save you time, money and the hassle of shopping around or deciding on what to buy.

SEASONAL SALES

Stock up now on summer clothes and sportswear. End-of-season sales are a great way to find deals on clothes, especially for children participating in after school sports.

Keep your eyes open for clothing which has multi-season possibilities. A summer tank top can go under a winter sweater, cropped pants can be worn with boots and skirts can be matched with warm, comfy tights. With a little creativity, you can be both frugal and trendy as you transform warm weather styles into fashionable cool weather clothes.

As a note of caution: make sure you're aware of school dress codes when making fashion choices. Some schools forbid bare shoulders or skirts shorter than a required length.

THE RIGHT BAG IS KEY

Backpacks are important! You don't want to buy one that is too heavy or too big because it could lead to headaches and sore muscles. Backpacks should have a waist strap and shoulder padding for support and shouldn't sit any lower than the waist.

Heavy books shouldn't be carried in hobo bags or sacs, but rather in a backpack that is correctly worn on both shoulders to prevent strain. If you will be purchasing a bag, however, make sure it's a style with a body strap to spread out the weight.

Every new school year holds possibilities and excitement. Have fun with back-to-school shopping and try not to stress out!
