[N92]Natural Weight Loss Aids
by Dr. George Best, Dr.
There are numerous weight loss products that are promoted as being natural, but just because a weight loss product is natural, it may not be safe, and it may not even be effective in the long-run. The fact of the matter is, certain types of natural weight loss aids not only have some serious potential risks associated with them, but they often cause hormonal reactions in the body that can result in weight gain in the long run, even if they stimulate weight loss at first.

The biggest problems are with the natural weight loss aids that contain stimulants. Natural weight loss aids that contain stimulants work very much like stimulant drugs, and they have the same risks.

The most commonly used stimulants in natural weight loss products include ephedra (also called ma huang), kola nut, guarana, yerba mate' and caffeine. All of these are very strong stimulants, and are similar in effect to drugs like amphetamines. Most people are aware that taking amphetamines can be dangerous, but they may be lulled into thinking the natural stimulants are safe for the sole reason that they are natural products.

There are two reasons that I recommend against using any kind of stimulant to promote weight loss. First, such products have potential health risks such as high blood pressure, tachycardia (elevated heart rate), insomnia, and stroke. Second, although these products do usually stimulate weight loss initially, in the long run they actually hinder weight loss and discontinuation of these products is typically followed by rapid weight gain.

As you first start using stimulants, the adrenal glands produce large quantities of the hormone adrenaline. Adrenaline speeds up the metabolism and causes fat burning and weight loss. This may sound great if you are trying to lose weight, but the problem is that the adrenals cannot keep up with high adrenaline production for more than a few weeks. When the adrenal glands can no longer produce large quantities of adrenaline, the metabolism slows down and weight loss typically ceases.

At the same time that the fat-burning effects of adrenaline are dying off, another problem is occurring. Stimulants, in addition to promoting high adrenaline production in the short term, also cause the adrenals to produce high levels of the hormone cortisol. The adrenals can produce high levels of cortisol for much longer than they can produce high amounts of adrenaline. Cortisol promotes the deposition of fat around the abdomen and stimulates weight gain. In the early stages of using stimulants, the effects of the high adrenaline production will win out over the elevated cortisol levels and rapid weight loss will typically occur. But as the adrenaline levels fall, and the cortisol levels stay high, weight gain is the result.

Discontinuing the use of stimulants suddenly usually has the result of rapid weight gain, because the effects of cortisol will outlast the effects of the adrenaline. Whether or not stimulants are discontinued though, the eventual effect will be that adrenaline production will be exhausted long before cortisol production begins to fade, and sooner or later the effects of cortisol will win out and weight gain will result.

It might be tempting to purchase a natural weight loss aid that contains stimulants due to the promises of quick weight loss, but in the long run all of these products are counterproductive and may endanger your health. Regardless of whether a product is natural or not, the use of stimulants for weight loss is best to be avoided.

Hoodia gordonii has been a popular weight loss aid the past few years. Unfortunately, because of short-supply, real hoodia is quite expensive, and some unscrupulous promoters will sell a fake product that has little or no hoodia in it. True hoodia is an effective appetite suppressant, and because of this, it is highly sought after. It can be taken in either pill or liquid form. For a liquid with a 20:1 concentration, I suggest using about 30 drops twice per day. For pills, I suggest using 500 to 1000 mg twice a day before lunch and dinner.

HCA, or hydroxycitric acid can help with weight loss by sitmulating the production and storage of glycogen, and this process controls appetite. I suggest taking it in an amount of 500 to 1000 mg per day split into equal doses to be taken about 30 - 60 minutes before a meal.

Fat burning and muscle building may be achieved with L-Leucine which may be marketed as Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA). A suggested dose is 1200 to 3000 mg per day taken in divided doses between meals.

Pyruvate supplementation may stimulate weight loss, but it takes a relatively large dose, and not everyone's GI tract can tolerate it. Short duration heavy use (at dosages of 8,000 to 10,000 mg per day) for up to 1 week at a time may be used to "jump-start" weight loss initially. Lower dosages (2,000 to 6,000 mg per day) are suggested for extended periods of use.

Wu-long tea, is an Asian black tea that also appears to assist in natural weight loss, both through its effects on suppressing insulin release (which enhances fat burning) as well as by suppressing appetite. This is taken as an actual brewed tea, as opposed to a pill form.

5-hydroxy tryptophan, or 5-HTP for short, can be taken in doses of 50 to 100 mg per day, best divided into multiple doses taken with meals. 5-HTP should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. It is also recommended that you only purchase 5-HTP products that have been independently lab-tested and found to be clear of the "Peak X" contaminant. It is recommended that the use of 5-HTP be stopped immediately if you start to experience muscle or joint pain and/or difficulty breathing. If these reactions occur, seek medical attention quickly. Uncontaminated 5-HTP is very safe, but in rare cases of contamination, serious illness can result.

7-Keto DHEA (note that this is not the same as regular DHEA) has demonstrated the effects of increased metabolic rate and increased lean muscle building and fat burning. It is best taken in two or more doses with meals for a total daily intake of 100 to 200 mg.

Hopefully you now have a better understanding of the available safe and effective natural weight loss aids and will be able to better choose which products will best suit your specific weight loss needs.
