[N259]Nfl Predictions Week 10
by Julie Cudney, Jul

Week 10 was a big turning point for many teams as many tried to either keep their winning momentum going or turn around their first-half luck. Unfortunately for some teams, a few players went down during week 10 with major injuries that will take them out for either the rest or most of the season. Some of the biggest injuries include Minnesota Viking Charles Gorton, New Orleans Saint Mike McKenzie and New England Patriot Adalius Thomas. There were minor injuries during week 10 as well like Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison, Tennessee Titans fullback Ahmard Hall, Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones and Green Bay Packers middle linebacker Nick Barnett. Injuries are particularly key at this point in the season, because often the team who remains the healthiest also has the best chance at doing well in the post season.

Gordon is the Vikings’ punt returner and had an injury that left everyone who saw it cringing. At the end of one of his punt returns, his leg was broken when a defender took him down, effectively ending his season. The extent of the injury was revealed when coach Brad Childress indicated that the break would require a pin to repair. Gordon has been with the Vikings since he entered the NFL in 2006. His first year in the league, he played in nine games and had one punt return. He had two kick returns the next year. So far this year, he has had 15 punt returns for 66 yards as well as two kick returns for 61 yards.

McKenzie, a cornerback, also suffered a break during week ten, his to his right kneecap. The injury also ends McKenzie’s season, as his rehab will have him out for three to six months. This isn’t his first injury to that knee, as he had reconstructive surgery to repair two ligaments in his right knee last year. This is McKenzie’s 10th year in the league, leading to speculation that the injury could end his career. McKenzie himself said he doubted that he wouldn’t be back next year. McKenzie was picked in the third round of the NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers in the 1999 draft. He stayed with the packers until he came to New Orleans in 2004. Last season with New Orleans, McKenzie had 52 tackles, three interceptions and two touchdowns. He already had 22 tackles and one interception this season before his injury.

New England linebacker Thomas may also be out for the rest of the season after he broke his left forearm during the Patriots’ 20-10 win over the Buffalo Bills during week ten. The nine-year pro has been with the Patriots since 2007, before which he was with the Baltimore Ravens. He had played in all nine games before his injury and had made 34 tackles and five sacks. Luckily for all of these teams, they all seem to have enough depth to overcome their respective losses.
